The current international and European momentum on Brain Health is an unprecedented opportunity to drive concrete policy changes that would directly benefit all European citizens, change the lives of the millions of people living with a brain disorder but also their families’ and carers’, while strengthening the EU’s competitiveness and role as a global leader in brain research. 🌐 Contribute to the future of neurotechnologies!   Neurotechnologies are revolutionizing brain health, diagnosis, and treatment, while also entering our everyday lives through work, education, and entertainment, hence raising crucial ethical and societal questions.    With the ultimate goal to promote a culture of stewardship and trust in #neurotechnologies, support greater wellbeing and sustainable economic growth of the field and guide public policy, activities of companies and investments, EBC and key partners are working towards an European Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies.   This charter builds on existing mechanisms of governance and complements existing legislation by contributing to human-centred risk evaluation, addressing gaps and shading light on grey areas deserving public attention and robust governance. 🔴 Yesterday marked the policy-oriented opening of the 2024 Brain Innovation Days in the European Parliament, "Bridging Neuroscience, Policy & Society", hosted by MEP Tomáš Zdechovský!   The event kicked off discussions on the main theme of this 4th edition, "Navigating the Brain Across a Lifetime," bringing the wider brain community and policymakers together to explore how policy can drive progress in brain health, research, and innovation.   After an introduction from EBC President Prof. Suzanne L Dickson & MEP Zdechovský, Prof. Theo Vos (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation) highlighted the health and economic burden of brain disorders across the EU. Dimitrios Georgiopoulos (Merck Healthcare) then shared both the challenges and the opportunities in elevating brain health on the EU agenda, highlighting the pathways for meaningful patient-centered progress in brain health policy.   Shiva Dustdar (European Investment Bank (EIB)) and Dr. Philip Schwab (AbbVie) discussed the role of industry in accelerating innovation and access to new treatments, and the impact of sustainable financing in supporting long-term brain health initiatives.   MEP Tomáš Zdechovský and MEP Andras Kulja MD then exchanged on the need to break barriers to innovation and care, to support data sharing between research institutions and among member states, and to facilitate early diagnosis and prevention.   The final panel discussion brought together Astri Arnesen (European Federation of Neurological Associations) & Peter Kéri (GAMIAN-Europe) to emphasize the critical gaps and urgent need for a collaborative approaches to address the challenges faced by people with lived experience of brain disorders across Europe.   We would like to sincerely thank MEP Zdechovský for hosting this event, and all speakers and attendees who joined us to officially kick-start the 4th edition of the #BIDays!

Ricardo Chavarriaga, Lead Responsible AI Innovation at the ZHAW School of Engineering, Head of the CAIRNE office Switzerland and member of the EBC-led Task Force on the European Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies, joined the discussion shading light on the Task Force efforts to build on existing mechanisms of governance and complements existing legislation through a multistakeholder process. 🔎 https://lnkd.in/eR3S_y-f
