Today, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU has adopted conclusions with a strong commitment to preventative action against non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This is a monumental step in addressing the growing impact of NCDs on European populations, societies, and economies. ECDA Chairman Raymond Vanholder stated, “Today’s adoption of the Council Conclusions is a significant recognition of the need to stimulate Europe’s efforts to reduce the prevalence of NCDs in our societies and commitment to achieve progress. ECDA thanks the Council for maintaining political focus and urgency on this issue." As the Council leadership prepares to shift, we encourage future Presidencies to keep NCD prevention as a key priority. Let's continue making progress towards healthier communities, stronger workforces, and more resilient national healthcare systems. 📌 Read ECDA's full statement here: https://bit.ly/3Leus6N

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 90% of all deaths in the European Union and 80% of the disease burden in EU countries. It is high time for more robust action. The European Parliament's resolution adopted in December 2023 can serve as a roadmap for future EU action in this field of NCDs, in the years to come. ECDA particularly supports the proposal for an EU-wide comprehensive strategy on NCDs, reinforced by disease-specific plans or measures. We are committed to actively supporting the implementation of the Parliament's recommendations, towards improved prevention and management strategies that effectively reduce the prevalence of NCDs and premature mortality in the EU.
