⚠️ BREAKING: Europe’s largest steelmaker delays its decarbonisation plans—again! ArcelorMittal has already secured €3 billion in public aid to transition away from coal and adopt climate-compatible steel production. Yet today, it announced further delays to its renewables-based DRI (direct reduced iron) projects across Spain, France, Belgium, and Germany. This isn’t just a setback—it’s a warning sign. While other European steelmakers like SHS, Salzgitter, and Stegra are proving the transition is possible, delays like this risk undermining the EU’s chance to lead in green steel. Europe’s steel transformation must stay on course. With energy efficiency, higher scrap usage, and renewable hydrogen-powered DRI, we can slash emissions and build Europe’s competitive edge in the global market. 👉👉 Read our joint press release: https://lnkd.in/eskRCSbj Beyond Fossil Fuels, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, SteelWatch

We have tested the presence of #PFAS in Hugo Clément As expected, the result is positive. We are all exposed to #ForeverChemicals 🩸The analysis found traces of PFOA, PFHxS and PFOS in his blood: three PFAS suspected of having possible health impacts, such as cancer, neurotoxic effects and infertility. We call on EU policy makers to solve this public health problem by implementing stronger regulation. #BanPFAS for a #ToxicFreeFuture 📝Join the petition: https://lnkd.in/esbyr2mU PFAS accumulate in our bodies and in the environment. How can the EU safeguard its hard-won progress on climate-friendly cooling? ❄️🍃 Fluorinated gases (F-gases) are a potent but often overlooked climate threat. Widely used as refrigerants, they account for 3% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions—equivalent to the emissions of the entire EU aviation sector. Last year, the EU made history by announcing the world’s first phase-out of HFCs, a popular type of F-gas. This bold move promises to slash emissions, spur innovation, and secure climate-friendly natural refrigerants. But Europe’s leadership in this area is at risk by: 🚢 Illegal F-gas trade, driven by organised crime and non-compliant businesses. 🔥 Trump’s return to the White House. In this Euractiv OpEd, Davide Sabbadin and Fionnuala Walravens explore these challenges and outline what the EU must do to uphold its climate leadership and maintain momentum on the new F-gas Regulation. 👉 OpEd: https://lnkd.in/eq8V5Bn7 👉 EU F-Gas Regulation Handbook 2024 - Key measures to drive the transition to F-gas-free cooling: https://lnkd.in/exc3fkcJ

🎭IN-EXTREMIS EU - White smoke rises in Brussels: after weeks of deadlock, the EU Parliament has finally approved the new Commission lineup, following a high-stakes deal among pro-EU forces. But the challenges don't end here. The new coalition still needs to agree on its priorities for the next mandate. While the Green Deal survives, the focus has shifted heavily toward economic growth, leaving critical issues like pollution and the triple planetary crisis conspicuously absent. The new Commission’s first test looms large: delivering the much-anticipated Clean Industrial Deal within its first 100 days. Presented as a roadmap to sustainability, the deal must avoid falling into the trap of deregulation and unchecked profits for polluters. With Europe facing interconnected crises in climate, biodiversity, and pollution, it’s a chance to align the industry with planetary boundaries and deliver real benefits for people and the planet. Don’t miss our full analysis! Our newsletter drops every Friday morning—make sure you’re signed up: https://lnkd.in/ePbXinCn

𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 - 𝟭𝟮 𝗗𝗘𝗖𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 The green transition promises a cleaner future. But where do the materials come from? Who bears the true cost of "clean" energy? And who gets to decide? We're often told that lithium mines are vital for a sustainable future, and local impacts are a small price to pay. But is that the whole picture? 🤔 Imagine your own home transformed into a mine. 𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 tells the story of a Portuguese community fighting to protect their land and livelihoods from a proposed lithium mine. 📽️ This powerful documentary exposes the hidden costs of extraction, the impact on communities and the environment, and the lack of transparency in the decision-making process. Join us for a screening and discussion that challenges the easy narratives and explores the complex realities! 📌 Cinéma Aventure, Brussels 📅 12 December ⌚ 19:00 - 22:00 Register now: https://lnkd.in/eRES_Aed
