  • ⚫ DARK DEALS - Black Friday may promise unbeatable deals, but its true cost extends far beyond the checkout counter, fuelling environmental destruction and labour exploitation.   With humanity consuming resources 75% faster than the planet can replenish, and with climate change indicators shattering records, it’s time to question whether we can continue to celebrate a day that perpetuates a model of consumption that drives us closer and closer to the cliff edge.    Back in the Brussels bubble - this week, UVD’s College of Commissioners secured its final approval from a narrow majority of MEPs. As the world faces the triple planetary crisis, and with turbulent times ahead across the Atlantic, the Union needs to seize the opportunity to emerge as the front-runner for environmental justice, economic resilience, and social well-being.    From the consequences of a disappointing COP29 to a blackmailing steelmaker we dive into the key issues shaping Europe's future—don’t miss the inside scoop! Our newsletter drops every Friday morning—make sure you’re signed up: https://lnkd.in/ePbXinCn

Water security and justice for whom?! 💧✊ A recent report from the 'Global Commission on the Economics of Water' explores the global hydrological cycle as a common good. While some aspects are welcome, it presents a concerning faith in neoliberal market economics, and the socio-environmental dangers this ideology fosters. Here's a brief summary (opinion piece) 👇 💚 The Good ➡️ Recognises 'green water' (water in soil and plants) as crucial within the hydrological cycle; and the need for a revolution in food systems to protect it ➡️ Supports need to conserve and restore freshwater ecosystems through nature-based solutions ➡️ Acknowledges the urgency of tackling pollution and properly implementing the 'polluter-pays principle' ➡️ Advocates corporate disclosure of water footprints with absolute limits of water consumption ❌ The Bad 👎 Hijacks water justice terminology such as “common good” or “rights holders” 👎 Endorses market-based approach (vs the Human Rights approach) with whole range of harmful economic instruments 👎 No challenge of consumption patterns in rich countries and of the impacts of the “green transition” (clean energy, AI, etc.) on the Global South 👎 No questioning of existing international water governance platforms (e.g. World Water Forum) Check out the full opinion piece by the EEB's Athénaïs Georges 👇 https://lnkd.in/e6XH9yCY Full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJXqkrge

  • 🤝 A Stronger EU with Civil Society at its Heart 🤝 We welcome the new EU Commission’s commitment to amplifying civil society’s voice, as highlighted in Commissioner McGrath's mission letter. This recognition of civil society organisations as the backbone of European democracy is essential for a fairer, greener, and more connected Europe. 🗨️ “Civil society organisations are the backbone of European democracy, bridging policymakers and citizens, safeguarding transparency, and driving solutions to critical challenges like climate change and inequality. Without their active involvement, the EU will lose the trust and connection with the very people it is meant to serve,” said Patrizia Heidegger, Deputy Secretary General, EEB. The EEB looks forward to collaborating closely to ensure CSOs have the support and platform they need to empower citizens and co-create the solutions our shared future demands. We need a Europe that listens, acts, and leads. 🌍💡 #CivilSociety #CivicSpace #EUGreenDeal

  • 🌍 A Turning Point for Europe’s Leadership 🌍 With today’s vote in the European Parliament, the new EU Commissioners have a mandate to act. The challenges we face—from climate change to the biodiversity and pollution crises—require nothing less than bold, united action. 🗨️ “With turbulent times ahead across the Atlantic, the EU must step up as the global leader on climate and environmental policy, restoring trust and hope. The pro-EU majority in Parliament has paved the way for the new Commission to act—now is the time to end political theatre and deliver the bold action the world demands on the climate, biodiversity, and pollution crises. We know what we need to do. The European Pact for the Future is our shared roadmap to stability, well-being, and opportunity. Let’s lead by example,” said Patrick ten Brink, Secretary General, EEB. This is Europe’s moment to lead by example. Let’s move from promises to action and ensure the EU becomes the global standard-bearer for environmental justice, economic resilience, and social well-being. 💪🇪🇺 #EUGreenDeal #FutureOfEurope #EUCommission

⚠️ BREAKING: Europe’s largest steelmaker delays its decarbonisation plans—again! ArcelorMittal has already secured €3 billion in public aid to transition away from coal and adopt climate-compatible steel production. Yet today, it announced further delays to its renewables-based DRI (direct reduced iron) projects across Spain, France, Belgium, and Germany. This isn’t just a setback—it’s a warning sign. While other European steelmakers like SHS, Salzgitter, and Stegra are proving the transition is possible, delays like this risk undermining the EU’s chance to lead in green steel. Europe’s steel transformation must stay on course. With energy efficiency, higher scrap usage, and renewable hydrogen-powered DRI, we can slash emissions and build Europe’s competitive edge in the global market. 👉👉 Read our joint press release: https://lnkd.in/eskRCSbj Beyond Fossil Fuels, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, SteelWatch
