About us
Founded in 1998, EGEC, the European Geothermal Energy Council is an international non-profit association located in Renewable Energy House in Brussels, in the heart of the European quarter. EGEC has 180 members from 30 European countries, including private companies, national associations, consultants, research centres, geological surveys, and public authorities. Our aim is to promote the use of geothermal energy. We do this by: • Working with European institutions. Developing a sound policy framework and beneficial financial instruments allows geothermal energy to complete with traditional sources and ensures that the environmental benefits are reflected in economic support for the sector. • Encouraging Research and Development and helping the public at large to access the results, enabling wider exploitation of geothermal resources. • Promoting the geothermal market in Europe as well as the export of European technology, services, and equipment to other parts of the world. • Representing the industries’ interests at all levels of policy making in order to improve business conditions. • Co-operating with national and international geothermal associations, and with any other associations promoting research on and application of renewable energy sources, joining forces to achieve successful development and implementation throughout Europe, and fostering European cooperation.

EGEC Geothermal reposted this
Home is where the heart is. Security, affordability and community make life fun. Geothermal heating and cooling is the bedrock for our affordable and social housing. There are loads of examples of community refurbishment schemes across Europe. Together, we are designing win-win solutions for the people by the people. It's time to scale this up. The #GeothermalStrategy and #AffordableHousingplan that Dan Jørgensen, Commissioner for Energy and Housing, is preparing will be the first time the energy transition centres on people and places. #GeothermalNOW #Geothermal Sorcha Edwards Housing Europe ICLEI Europe Energy Cities REScoop.eu Niels Fuglsang Tamsin Lishman Marie Cowan MRIA EGEC Geothermal
Congratulations, Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, and the entire College! Housing is not just an individual challenge—it’s a collective one. Delivering truly affordable, sustainable, and decent homes requires all hands on deck. As Europe’s housing sector takes centre stage, the big question remains: where and how do people want to live ❓ This BBC StoryWorks short film is a glimpse into what could be your strongest ally for better systems—public, cooperative, and social housing—told through the voices of those who live and work in them.

💶 Unlocking geothermal: The case for a European financial risk guarantee scheme 🌍 Geothermal, like all other renewable energies, requires large, upfront capital costs with very low operational costs. The fossil energy world is the inverse of this. Geothermal is blessed with very long lifetimes. This is why a few additional hurdles have to be overcome. Sometimes, there is a resource risk – hot waters may be a little further away than originally foreseen. This risk, in a mature market, would be covered by private insurance companies. In markets that are not there yet, public risk guarantees are required. 🔗Find out more about financial risk guarantee schemes and the other building blocks of Europe’s geothermal strategy. 👉 The key elements required from the European geothermal strategy, by our one and only Sanjeev Kumar!
Geothermal energy was invented in Europe. The first geothermal heat pump was patented in 1912 and the first power plant commissioned in 1913. Today, the US and China are world leaders in installed capacity respectively. Dan Jorgensen, Commissioner-Designate for Energy and Housing, together with the European Parliament and Europe’s Energy Mnisters seek to reverse this situation. That is the purpose of the #geothermal strategy and a dedicated action that makes it easier for cities, farmers, industry and rural communities to invest in this vital, large-scale, solution. I outline some thoughts of what it should contain and welcome your input. #GeothermalNow #energytransition Dan Jørgensen Mechthild Wörsdörfer Lukasz Kolinski Matthieu Ballu Marina Mesure Niels Fuglsang Martin Hojsik Michael Bloss ECR Group in the European Parliament Attila Steiner Krzysztof (Chris) Bolesta Euractiv https://lnkd.in/ej644fnV
