About us
European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA)! EMSEA is a network of marine science educators acting as one voice across Europe and beyond. Our mission is to act as a hub for the European marine education community to promote and deliver Ocean Literacy across society by working with scientists, teachers, policy makers and the public. Our Vision? Our shared vision is a society of Ocean Literate citizens who recognise the vital importance of the Ocean, working together to ensure it is sustained for future generations. What do we do? EMSEA is a membership organisation. We support our members by sharing good practice and training opportunities through our annual international conferences. We work on grant-funded projects, ensuring our members can benefit from this work. We organise events within our EMSEA regional groups and provide ways for the network to connect through digital platforms.

Requesting support for addition of "Supporting Ocean Literacy" section to UNOC3 Political Declaration - please see below and consider signing on!! On behalf of the global Ocean Literacy community, we - as members of the IOC-UNESCO Ocean Literacy Group of Experts and the DCO on Challenge 10 and the OLWA Steering Committees - are writing this letter to underline the importance of Ocean Literacy and strongly advocate for its presence in the final version of the UNOC3 Declaration titled “Our ocean, our future: accelerating action.” Ocean Literacy represents one of the pillars of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). After being originally developed more than 20 years ago to enhance ocean topics in formal education, Ocean Literacy has since then profoundly evolved, to encompass the complexity of human-ocean interactions and relationships. Today, Ocean Literacy is much more than understanding ocean science: it means recognizing the far-reaching consequences of our actions. By cultivating a global culture of ocean stewardship, we can facilitate a future where we thrive in harmony with the ocean. We need an ocean-literate society that advocates for policies that respect the ocean’s inherent right to exist, flourish and regenerate. In this context, UNOC3 represents a crucial opportunity to make the voice of the global Ocean Literacy community heard in the international policy arena: one that cannot be missed. We urge you to consider including the following paragraph in the UNOC3 Declaration under Art.24: “Commit to implementing initiatives that improve overall ocean literacy in educational frameworks and wider public awareness initiatives, emphasizing transdisciplinary, experiential and inclusive learning approaches that acknowledge scientific and traditional knowledge to address systemic challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable marine resource management, and to cultivate ocean stewardship across all sectors of society.” Moreover, the key messages and action points included in the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action, a milestone document created through an inclusive and comprehensive process and adopted at the Ocean Literacy World Conference in Venice last June, contribute to clearly state its strategic relevance in advancing sustainable development. Therefore, we decided to include the 10 action points developed therein as an Annex to this petition. If you agree with the above statements, you can sign this petition: https://lnkd.in/eNEE7pWq
