About us
The Observatory is a partnership hosted by WHO that supports and promotes evidence-based health policy-making in Europe. It has four core functions: Country monitoring: providing analytic and evaluative descriptions of country health systems and systematically monitoring developments; Analysis: exploring how health systems ‘work’ through secondary and comparative research, multi-disciplinary studies and policy briefs on key and emerging challenges; Performance assessment: supporting the development and interpretation of indicators for practical policy use and to help improve performance; Knowledge brokering: making Observatory evidence visible and useful to its target audiences by unpacking and sharing it in a range of formats. Last week, the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies attended the Health Systems Global symposium in Nagasaki, 🇯🇵. 🗺️ Across three sessions that gathered global speakers and an international audience, panelists discussed the future of health systems and the building blocks required for creating sustainable, resilient systems in the present. The presentations drew from a wide variety of research backgrounds and policy expertise in order to explore: 🧩 why it's important to embed climate resilience into health system performance assessments (#HSPA) and integrate decarbonizing measures; 🧩 how countries can create an interconnected health system that links academic research and policy-making to maximise their impact, so that evidence can be generated and incorporated into policy in real time; 🧩 the measurable ways in which health and health systems contribute to global sustainable development goals (#SDG) and how co-benefits can be drawn from intersectoral action both now and in the future. The research, insights, and best practices presented by the Observatory throughout these sessions are closely linked to our portfolio, which you can find available in full on our website. 🔎 Read more on: 👉 #HSPA https://lnkd.in/dgg6G8Ux 👉 #SDGs https://lnkd.in/eYv6Frke Moderated by Dheepa Rajan and Matthias Wismar (European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies). Today, WHO and European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies unveiled the preliminary findings of the study “Rehabilitation Services Financing and Organization: Learning from European Countries towards Strengthening Rehabilitation Care in Ukraine” at a policy dialogue in Kyiv. The event brought together national and regional authorities, clinical experts, and international partners to explore good practices and lessons from European countries such as Croatia, England, Estonia, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, and Switzerland. This study is a significant step toward improving rehabilitation care financing in Ukraine by drawing on European experiences. Key insights: ✔ Well-developed patient pathways are essential to ensure accessible and coordinated care from acute care to community and long-term care. ✔ Strengthening regional level needs-based purchasing is vital, supported by a robust monitoring system. ✔ Smartly designed incentives enable the implementation of desired patient pathways while addressing patients’ varying needs. The event was organized by the WHO Country Office Ukraine, the WHO Barcelona Office for Health Systems Financing, and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, with financial support from the European Union. 💡 Last week, the Observatory was in Vienna to wrap up the Technical Support Instrument project “EU Health Resource Hub for Sustainable Investing in Health” and present its contributions to the project's outcomes. Over two days, we discussed with Bundesministerium für Soziales, Gesundheit, Pflege und Konsumentenschutz, Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment, Ministrstvo za zdravje, DG REFORM European Commission and Expertise France the key lessons learned and shared the project experience with representatives from other EU Member States and the Commission. It has been a pleasure working with such a committed group of colleagues on this key topic for EU’s health systems future. 👉 If you are interested in how we can make the case for public investment in health, join us this Friday EPH Conference at 14:00 Room 3C! AI is set to revolutionize healthcare, offering unprecedented insights into diseases and enhancing therapeutic interventions for better treatment. This transformative technology holds immense promise for the health sector. However, Europe faces a critical challenge—the lack of a cohesive strategy to ensure all countries benefit equally from AI advancements. At our plenary at the EPH Conference today, we delved into responsible AI use, future steps, and how public health professionals can harness this revolutionary tool. Our report on the status of digital health in the Region revealed that while 60% of Member States have a national data strategy, but only 35% have a policy regulating big data and AI in health. This is a critical gap that must be urgently addressed. AI can enhance the trust that has been lost in health systems by: ✔ enabling personalized patient care ✔ predicting needs with data-driven insights ✔ automating tasks for improved patient interactions ✔ optimizing resource allocation ✔ adapting to evolving healthcare demands But how can we build trust in AI? By: ✔ ensuring AI algorithms are transparent ✔ co-designing tools with healthcare professionals and patients ✔ aligning AI with real healthcare needs For key regulatory considerations on AI for health, visit: https://lnkd.in/gykPpBm2 Learn more about the status of digital health in the WHO European Region: https://lnkd.in/g2pmBvv2 — EUPHA - European Public Health Association EUPHA DH & AI - Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence Section EUPHA European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies Natasha Azzopardi Muscat Dimitra Panteli Keyrellous Adib Martin McKee Dr Stefan Buttigieg MD MSPH MSc Lorena Boix Alonso Katharina Ladewig #EPH2024
