ResiLoop’s CEO, Sophi MacMillan enjoyed participating in a panel discussion with the audience at the Waste Expo Australia 2024 in Melbourne today.
The session, ‘Advancing Product Stewardship Schemes and Extended Producer Responsibility in Australia’ looked at the current state of #ProductStewardship in Australia, from the perspectives of the state government with Matt Genever, new schemes (ResiLoop and Seamless Danielle Kent) and the recycling sector with ACOR's Suzanne Toumbourou.
With a highly engaged audience, we explored some of the challenges and possibilities in implementing and scaling these schemes. Key themes emerging here, and throughout the 2 days of conference, have been:
· the challenge of scaling up reprocessing and #ManufacturingSolutions to deal with the high volumes of materials derived from imported product
· the essential role #ProcurementPolicy plays in increasing demand for recycled content products and the need – especially in the infrastructure and construction sectors - to be brave in giving such new products a go
· the need to develop a compelling business case to engage those placing product on the market to take responsibility, such as through market drivers and incentives that create competitive advantage for those who (really) are, versus those who are not. Failing this, regulation and mandatory schemes will come!
ResiLoop is on the right path, challenging though it may be, and all our Members – suppliers, retailers and contractors – should be highly congratulated for taking #ResponsibleAction 👏
