Is Europe ready to tackle summertime overheating in urban homes? 🌆 Summertime overheating in urban homes is becoming a growing issue, even in regions with traditionally temperate climates. With Europe warming at twice the global average (as highlighted in a recent Sweco report), the need to address this challenge is more urgent than ever. But are we truly prepared? Key facts: 🌡️ Europe’s warming rate is double the global average, significantly increasing the risk of overheating in homes. 🏢 Over 36 million Europeans live in high-rise tower blocks—small, densely occupied spaces with limited ventilation, making them particularly vulnerable to rising indoor temperatures. 🌆 Urban densification and ongoing climate change are set to worsen the problem in both new and existing buildings. Solutions to prioritize: 🛠️ Passive heat-control measures such as external shading can dramatically reduce the need for air-conditioning and help maintain comfortable temperatures. 🌍 Sustainable, climate-adaptive design is crucial for lowering energy consumption and preventing further climate change impacts. 💡 Refurbishment techniques to retrofit older buildings and improve their resilience to future heatwaves are essential. By rethinking how we design, build, and manage our homes, we can ensure comfortable, energy-efficient living spaces while limiting carbon emissions. 📖 Find out more in the study by Lomas, K.J. Global temperatures set records for 13 consecutive months 🌡️♨️☀️ The NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that July 2024 was the warmest July on record globally, marking it as the warmest month in NOAA's 175-year record. July 2024 was 0.03°C warmer than July 2023, potentially making it the hottest month ever since 1850. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service also noted July 2024 as the second warmest month globally, just 0.04°C lower than July 2023. The differences between datasets are minimal and fall within the statistical margin of error. These record-breaking temperatures underscore the urgency of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres' Call to Action on Extreme Heat. He warned, “Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere.” 🌍 Intense and prolonged heatwaves have affected every continent, with at least ten countries recording daily temperatures exceeding 50°C. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo highlighted that Death Valley, California, registered a record average monthly temperature of 42.5°C, and even Antarctica's ice sheets are feeling the heat. The World Meteorological Organization community is committed to the UN's Call to Action by enhancing heat-health early warning systems. It's estimated that scaling these systems up could save approximately 98,000 lives annually. 🌱 "Climate adaptation alone isn't enough. We must address the root cause by reducing record levels of greenhouse gas emissions," said Celeste Saulo. We have the knowledge and tools to combat extreme heat. Now is the time to act with urgency and determination. Our health, environment, and future depend on it. 🌍💚 #extremeheat #climateaction #heatwavepreparedness #sustainability #greenenergy #climateresilient #buildings #solarshading #shading #cooling #reducingcoolingdemand Source: https://lnkd.in/euBYMwuH

🌍♨️ Europe is warming faster than any other continent—a reality that poses significant public health and infrastructure challenges. As urban areas experience the heat island effect, city temperatures are soaring, making the need for climate resilience more urgent than ever. A recent Urban Insight report by Sweco highlights "significant shortcomings" in the heat-related climate plans of 24 European cities. With urban heatwaves projected to double by 2100, it's crucial that we adopt innovative and natural solutions to protect our communities. One such solution is solar shading, a key component in reducing indoor temperatures and enhancing building performance. Acces to Sweco report on https://lnkd.in/eNPeHM2F 🏙️ In Brussels, city temperatures can be up to 8°C higher than surrounding rural areas during heatwaves. With the EU allocating €680 billion for climate-relevant measures between now and 2027, it's time to act! At the European Solar Shading Organisation, we are committed to making buildings across Europe more climate-resilient. Our Global Shading Day is a crucial initiative to raise awareness about the role of solar shading in cooling our cities and protecting vulnerable populations. By incorporating shading solutions, we can significantly reduce the need for energy-intensive air conditioning, cutting down on carbon emissions and creating more sustainable urban environments. We call on policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens to join us in this vital effort. Together, we can cool our cities and build a resilient future for all. This entertaining video on YouTube by Technology Connections explores the history and benefits of window awnings in the United States, going back to the early 20s. From historical porches to modern installations, awnings have proven their worth time and again. In fact, the rise of air conditioning and changes in building design have pushed this technology to the background in the U.S.A. As we face increasing temperatures and rising energy costs, the reporter suggests to reintroduce this simple yet effective solution. "Awnings can reduce cooling energy demand by up to 20%, making them a smart addition to any home. Plus, with advancements in materials and smart technology, maintaining and using awnings is easier than ever." "Awnings are like a baseball cap for your house!" 🧢🏠. We could not agree more. 🤩 Watch the full video now and let's bring back the cool! 🌞🏡📺https://lnkd.in/eTc4KJWz #energyefficiency #sustainableliving #homeimprovement #solarshading #europeansolarshadingorganisation #staycool #smarthomes #historicaldesign #greenliving #savemoney #climatechange #cooltips
