Entitled ‘𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞’, #EUA2025AC will explore what sustainability means from the point of view of funding, digitalisation, academic careers and university leadership. Launched in 2019, the European Universities Initiative has established 65 European Universities across 35 countries. After several years of activities, securing long-term financial sustainability is now crucial for the continued success of these alliances. In his #EUAExpertVoices article Eric Tschirhart, a Full Professor of Physiology at the University of Luxembourg and Special Advisor to the university’s rector for the UNIVERSEH European University, presents three forecasts for the future funding of alliances, with special attention for universities in Europe’s transnational zones. A new journal article recaps some of the 2023 #EUALearnTeach Thematic Peer Group “Development and strategic benefits of learning and teaching centres” key points. MEPs push for Widening to become mainstream in FP10, reports Science|Business 🗞️ ☕ https://bit.ly/41fNBOt "Measures that will make Widening a strong presence in FP10, the next EU research and innovation Framework Programme, are being drawn up by an informal Parliamentary task force. The group, which began work in January, will advocate for mainstreaming Widening in FP10 by integrating its principles across all programme areas and funding instruments. It also wants to see inclusivity and capacity-building prioritised, and participation from underrepresented countries promoted in call designs, evaluations and partnerships. The concept of Widening was introduced in the eighth Framework Programme, Horizon 2020, to address disparities in research and innovation performance across Europe. It was originally meant to be a temporary label that empowered countries with lower participation rates in the programme, not a permanent status. (...)" EUA was represented at the meeting by Research and Innovation Policy Analyst Kamila Kozirog and Policy & Project Officer Federica Garbuglia, to discuss strategies to strengthen and optimise widening instruments in #FP10. Yesterday, the European University Association university leaders - members of our #Research & #Innovation Strategy Group - delved into key topics driving a big chunk of our R&I work right now, including EU competitiveness, the next EU budget, the future R&I Framework Programme (#FP10), the European Research Area (#ERA) Act and the Innovation Act. They shared their perspectives on how these developments should take shape and their potential impact on both the future of Europe and the university sector. A key highlight was the exchange with the Common Policy Centre at DG RTD, European Commission, which focused on the future European Competitiveness Fund and preparations for FP10. Today, EUA Director of Governance, Funding and Public Policy Development, Thomas Estermann, spoke at the Meeting of the Western Balkans Platform on Research and Innovation to share key takeaways from the STAND project, in which EUA has been a partner. Our contributions, based on the EUA #AutonomyScorecard and our experience in leadership development through the NEWLEAD (#unileaders_EU) project, have helped shape the project’s insights. 📊 STAND aims to modernise governance, strengthen management capacities, and enhance accountability and transparency in Western Balkans universities. With EUA’s support and an in-depth analysis of university autonomy, project partners have developed three white papers with concrete recommendations—both for necessary reforms and for how universities can proactively drive change.
