A couple weeks ago, I had the great pleasure to represent EFRO Brussels International at the Multi-country Workshop on Engaging Citizens for Cohesion Policy in Bologna, organised by the OECD - OCDE and the European Commission DG REGIO (TAIEX). 🥪 As part of the panel on multi-level governance, I emphasised the obstacles and opportunities that come with the "sandwich of governance levels" in Brussels, and how to navigate its political landscape to ensure citizens' opinions are heard. What a fascinating opportunity it was to discuss with representatives from seven EU countries, to learn from one another and find so many common challenges! 🗝️ Key lesson: building trust between citizens and governments goes in two directions! We cannot simply dismiss citizen participation in democratic processes as a box to be checked. The value that lies in both the macro- and micro-level data emerging from citizens' panels, surveys and juries is indispensable to the success of public infrastructure and budgeting efforts. 👑 Particular thanks to Eloïse Gabadou Santiago, Giulia Cibrario and Mauricio Mejia for the practical organisation of the workshop, as well as to the Regione Emilia-Romagna for hosting the event. Finally, a big thank you to Julian Miranda Tella and Mathieu Berger for joining the team and being of immense value during the panels and bilateral discussions.
