FES Just Climate acts as a think thank and a policy advisor to shape the industrial revolution of our times.

About us

FES Just Climate acts as a think thank about current and coming trends, and a policy advisor in ongoing debates. We support FES offices and their partners in shaping the industrial revolution of our times. We focus on energy, industrial, structural and labor policies, and the European Green Deal. In 2021 the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung launched a competence center for Climate and Social Justice, based in Brussels. Climate and social policies must be two sides of the same European coin in the future. We need to develop climate-neutral energy systems and industries. Simultaneously, we need to safeguard and strengthen the welfare state, local participation and workers’ rights.

Seen this way... Russia is calling on Donald Trump not to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. This may seem surprising at first glance, but of course it makes sense. The very countries that like to block far-reaching resolutions at the UN #climate negotiations are very clearly in favor of the format continuing as it is. 🔄 🌍 In view of the principle of unanimity, it is of course easier to prevent ambitious goals, such as phasing out oil and coal, from within than from outside. 🛢️ Accordingly, Saudi Arabia, which was also perceived as a blocker at the most recent COP in Baku, is clearly committed to the UN process. It is not only climate activists who are concerned about a domino effect if, alongside the USA, countries like Argentina were to turn their backs on the agreement. 🤝So, even the opponents of a consistent #energy transition also fear that they could lose the support of like-minded allies.  #ClimateGoals #ParisAgreement #UNProcess #Geopolitics #ClimateDiplomacy Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

At least it did not fail. ✅ Of course, more ambitious resolutions were actually needed at the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku. 🌍⚖️ At the same time, the current global situation does not really allow for more. 🤷♂️🌎 A new global climate finance target of 300 billion US dollars a year between 2026 and 2035 is something the industrialized countries can live with, as they will no longer be solely responsible for raising the money in future. 💵📊🤝🌐 The emerging economies can also live with it. After all, it has not been specified in concrete terms how much they will have to contribute in future. 🤔📉 The poorer countries are not satisfied, as this is clearly not sufficient for them. 🌍 But the alternative to grudging agreement would have been failure. That would have helped poorer countries even less. From a geopolitical perspective, the result is causing a stir. 🌍✨ The former division between industrialized countries on the one hand and emerging and developing countries on the other has lost significance in Baku. 🏢🌐⚖️ China should be quite satisfied with the outcome. 🇨🇳 It has shown itself to be a constructive player by disclosing its own aid, but without committing itself to greater efforts at the same time. 💼🔍 With Donald Trump taking office, the USA will be largely absent from the climate diplomacy stage. 🇺🇸 China will know how to take advantage of this. 💡🌟 Nobody can get past the People's Republic so quickly. Not the Europeans, who have to forge alliances. 🇪🇺🤝 And not the Global South, which cannot shoulder climate-neutral modernization and adaptation alone. 🌍⚙️ The fact that China has a highly competitive clean tech industry and also processes most of the key raw materials itself makes the country a key player. 🏭🔑♻️ #UNClimateConference #ClimateAction #ClimateFinance #GlobalGoals #Sustainability #IndustrializedCountries #EmergingMarkets #DevelopingCountries #ClimateJustice #Geopolitics #China #CleanTech #ClimateDiplomacy #ClimateCrisis #ClimateNeutrality #SustainableDevelopment #RawMaterials #GlobalSouth #USA #EuropeanUnion Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung https://lnkd.in/eyJ_p5TP

💡 Rich people often harm the climate with their investments - we all pay the price, but especially the poorest. 📌 If the fight against global warming is to be successful, the rich corporations in particular must be held more accountable. 📌 Billions could be raised through higher taxes on large fortunes and environmentally harmful businesses in order to finance the climate transition. 💶 🌍 This is not only fairer, but also relieves the burden on the general population. #climatetransition #socialjustice #climatejustice #superrich #taxes Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

🔄 Tit for tat? There are increasing signs that Europe wants to apply this motto more strongly to China in future. ⚙️ Specifically, it is about stricter rules for clean technologies. If Chinese companies produce in Europe and benefit from subsidies, then they should also share their know-how here. 🇨🇳 This process might feel familiar to China. Sharing technological knowledge has traditionally been a condition for foreign companies to set up production facilities there—and was a key to today's industrial policy success, which is now putting Europe under massive competitive pressure. 🔋 This procedure could now take effect for the first time in the strategically enormously important battery industry. In December, the EU Commission intends to invite tenders for a billion-euro grant here. 📜 Corresponding recommendations for such a procedure can also be found in the Draghi Report. Its aim is to develop a new industrial strategy for Europe. 🌍 This has now become even more urgent following Trump's election. His threatened tariffs on Chinese goods are likely to further increase the diversion of production and goods to Europe. #CleanTech #IndustrialStrategy #EUChina #TechPolicy #BatteryInnovation #GlobalTrade #Sustainability #EconomicPolicy Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung https://lnkd.in/d_8-PRJt

🌍🔥War, climate, hunger - there is certainly no shortage of pressing issues for the #G20 at its summit in Rio, which begins today.  Host Brazil is pushing for global taxation of the super-rich. 💰This would not only be #fair, but also #practical, as it would solve one of the key challenges of our time - raising sufficient funds to combat climate change. In any case, from Baku, all eyes will be on Rio. The UN Climate Change Conference there could do with some momentum on the funding issue. Fittingly, the #energy transition will also be discussed in Rio. ⚡Without ambitious targets from the G20, no progress can be made, as the 20 are responsible for around 80% of #emissions. For the first time this year, there was a preliminary Social Summit with numerous representatives from civil society. ⚖️🌿#Climate and #just transition are also on the agenda here, along with the fight against poverty and housing shortages, the protection of the indigenous population and the reform of global governance institutions to better reflect current geopolitical developments. ✊One can only hope that this pressure from the streets truly helps ensure that the fight against climate change and hunger takes a prominent place in the G20's joint final declaration. #JustTransition #G20 #ClimateFunding #G20SocialSummit #CivilSociety Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung https://lnkd.in/eWvGAA_G

Moderate growth, major risks. This sums up the EU Commission's autumn economic forecast, which was presented today in Brussels. 📊 💶 The euro area as a whole is expected to grow by 1.3% next year; not exactly exhilarating. The outlook for Germany, the largest economy, is even gloomier: the Commission is forecasting growth of just 0.7%. Nevertheless, both are better than the figures for the current year: 0.8% of growth for the euro area and Germany is even expected to shrink by 0.1% in 2024. And even the cautious optimism for the coming year is facing trouble: possible #trade wars with the USA under Trump and with China are clouding the outlook. In particular, the tariffs threatened by Trump are a growth killer. 📦📉 A look at investments is also a cause for concern, as European companies have been very reluctant to invest this year. The EU's #competitiveness must be increased. EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs Paolo Gentiloni, still in office, is calling for structural reforms accordingly. 🛠️⚖️ And with a view to investment and consumer confidence, it is also clear that #reliability is needed, at least with regard to Europe’s own reform agenda. The current uncertainty is poison for the economy and for the climate-neutral transition. 🌱🏭 #EconomicGrowth #Competitiveness #EconomicOutlook #GreenTransition Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

Trump's election as US president is bad news for the climate. ⚠️🌎🔥 But the absence of the USA could lead to other players stepping forward more strongly. The EU, for example, is now expected to do so. China is also showing more flexibility than before at the COP in Baku. For the first time, the People's Republic formally made public information on its climate financing for developing countries. Since 2016, 24.5 billion US dollars have flowed.💸 Climate finance is the central and also controversial topic at this year's COP. The industrialised countries would like to see the donor group expanded, for example to include China and the Gulf states. 🌐 Vice Premier Deng Xuexiang used the same wording as the industrialized countries: to already have provided and mobilised funds for climate finance. This is not an official participation in the new global climate finance target and there are no signs of this happening. Greater transparency could now be a very constructive first step towards more intensive negotiations. And it could also encourage other emerging economies to become more active. #ClimateFinance #EmergingEconomies #COP29 #COP29Baku #ClimateAction #ClimatePolitics Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung https://t.ly/VlPeq

With Donald Trump's imminent inauguration, trade issues will come back to the top of the international agenda. 🌍🏛️ For the time being, this does not apply to the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku. But we can be sure not for long so. At the heart of the debate: the EU climate tariff (CBAM). This CO2 border adjustment mechanism is intended to prevent production being relocated from the EU to countries with lower environmental and climate standards. Major emerging economies like China view this European climate tariff on carbon-intensive goods, such as steel and cement, as a thorn in their side. The Chinese government sought to address CO2 taxes and other “restrictive trade measures” at COP 29. On behalf of the BASIC group, China submitted a related proposal in advance. Alongside China, this group includes heavyweights like Brazil, India, and South Africa. 🌐 🔍From a European perspective, there was concern that such a focus might sideline the core issues of the COP—namely, the reduction of CO2 emissions and the question of potential funding sources. On the first day of the COP, the topic was hotly debated but not put on the agenda. China obviously did not want to escalate this issue. ⏳ But it is not off the table. CBAM is likely to take a prominent spot on the agenda during upcoming WTO negotiations. Challenging talks for the EU can then be expected. #COP29 #COP29Baku #ClimateTariff #GreenTrade #TradeDisputes #Geopolitics Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung https://lnkd.in/eQHDu7W9
