About us

Since 2013 the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative has enabled exchange between leading organizations and businesses in the floriculture sector on sustainability, helping them to progress on this important agenda. In continuity with the first milestone ambition of reaching 90% flowers and plants sustainably produced and traded by 2020, the FSI 2025 ambition further advance transparency and responsibility in the floriculture supply chain. Under the three pillars of responsible production & trade, responsible conduct, and integrated reporting, FSI members have collectively have set four main objectives to hit by 2025: 1/ the broadening of the 90% responsibly produced and traded volumes ambition to include new environmental and social aspects 2/ A reduction of the carbon footprint for selected products by 2025 3/ A Reduction of the living wage gap of workers at farm level by 2025 4/ Encouraging FSI members to report on progress and integrate due diligence reporting by 2025.

  • The first FloriPEFCR tools have passed the test—Are you next? Early November the first two tools have successfully passed the benchmarking process and have been officially included in the FSI Basket of FloriPEFCR Tools! These tools now meet the rigorous standards set by the FloriPEFCR guidelines launched by the European Commission in early 2024, helping the floriculture industry track and reduce its environmental footprint. But the journey doesn't stop here—we want YOU to join! If you are a tool provider or consultant with a tool or methodology that aligns with the FloriPEFCR framework, this is your chance to be part of the movement. By joining the FSI Basket, you will be part of an industry-wide effort to provide verified, reliable environmental performance data and help the sector demonstrate its commitment to sustainability. Here’s how you can get involved: 1. Benchmark your tool against the FloriPEFCR standards. 2. Collaborate with others through data exchange and stimulate business-to-business improvements. 3. Be highlighted in the FSI Basket and gain recognition for your contribution to reducing the floriculture industry’s environmental footprint. This is an incredible opportunity helping the entire sector remain future-fit and meet growing demand for environmentally responsible products. • Celebrating a Milestone in Sustainability for the Floriculture Sector!   We’re thrilled to share that the “HortiFootprint Calculator” by MPS | LetsGrow.com and the “FloriFootprint Tool” by Greenhouse Sustainability have successfully passed the independent benchmarking and are now officially included in the FSI Basket of FloriPEFCR tools.   This approval marks another step forward for the floriculture industry. By providing accessible, comparable, and reliable environmental data at the product level, these tools empower our sector to make informed, data-driven decisions toward a smaller environmental footprint.   With the FloriPEFCR (Floriculture Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules) now in place, supported by approval from the European Commission, cut flowers and potted plants can be assessed uniformly for their environmental impact. This calculation methodology provides a scientifically substantiated approach to strengthening our sustainability efforts.   Both tools have provided results demonstrating correct application of the FloriPEFCR calculation rules. Moreover, they have indicated that only externally verified data will be used and that they are able to import and export outcomes in the prescribed standard data format. This recognition therefore also comes with a great responsibility for the companies providing tools to adhere to these guidelines. With reliable data and outcomes, we can actively reduce our footprint and highlight our sector’s commitment to a positive impact.   We encourage more developers to join this benchmarking initiative. Collaboration, transparency, and the sharing of best practices are essential for addressing hotspots and driving sustainable progress for the entire floriculture industry!   For more information, visit: https://lnkd.in/e2d5Gr27

  • What an amazing Monday afternoon it was as we kicked of the Expo week with a full house of industry professionals participating in the Floriforum, organized by UNION FLEURS - International Flower Trade Association, and Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI)   The inspiring line up delivered great stories and food for thought with keynote speaker Jan van Dam, CEO of Dutch Flower Group highlighting both the progress made and the ongoing challenges the industry faces. From biodiversity initiatives to reducing carbon footprints, it’s clear sustainability has moved from “nice-to-have” to essential.   The discussion continued with panelists Sibbe Krol, Director of Sustainability at Bloom & Wild; Yvonne Watzdorf, CEO of Flower Council of Holland, Ian McNair Manager Sustainability, Fleurop Interflora Global Flower Services SA; Simon Derrick, Global Head of Sustainability at Blue Skies; and James MacGregor, Development Economist and author of ‘Fair Miles: Re-charting the Food Miles Map.’   The panel discussion was vividly and expertly moderated by Simone van Trier. She also invited Arnold Wittkamp from Thursd. to give a short introduction on how new channels and possibilities like TikTok and ChatGPT are driving consumer preferences and knowledge.   Summarizing, some of the key takeaways centered around Proactive Storytelling: emphasize the industry’s positive contributions to sustainability in public narratives. Collaboration: strengthen partnerships across the value chain to meet collective sustainability goals. Data Collection and Transparency: continue improving data quality to effectively communicate industry impact and Future-Readiness: prepare for evolving consumer expectations and new regulatory requirements through long-term planning.   Lets keep the discussion going and together we can drive meaningful change in the floriculture industry!   Thanks to HPP Exhibitions and Kuehne+Nagel for their support to make this event possible.

  • Great news from the UK! End-of-life management and supply chain circularity are key to establishing a sustainable future for the floriculture sector. Hosting events to share expertise, knowledge and resources are great for driving progress on these topics. Congratulations to all those involved in creating such a valuable event last week at Coventry Cathedral. FSI is proud to be a part of this collaborative journey bringing together so many stakeholders from the sector. Looking forward to continuing the hard work going forward!

Yesterday a new booklet on sustainability in floriculture was launched at Coventry Cathedral! 🌸 This was all part of the Sustainable Flowers Research Project, which focuses on reducing plastic, packaging and waste to build a more sustainable cut-flower industry 💐 The day began with a warm welcome from Professor Nick Henry, Director of the Research Centre for Creative Economies, Coventry University (CCE), followed by insightful introductions to the booklet from Professor David Bek (also from CCE) and Dr. Jill Timms from University of Surrey. Attendees explored interactive demonstrations by experts such as The Bath Flower School, Farewell Flowers, Shane Connolly - the King's florist, Organic Blooms and Zinnia Floral Design, all showcasing their eco-friendly floral designs. The event also featured panel discussions including Dr. Anna Bogush from our Centre for Agroecology, Water & Resilience, Zara Taylor from Interflora UK & Ireland, Dr. Angela Coulton from Petal and Twig, and Johnny Young from JZ Flowers/Dutch Flower Group. The project brings together a range of other collaborators such as the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative, the British Floristry Association, Flowers from the Farm, Superflora and Bloom & Wild – all to sow the seeds for a greener floral future 🌷 Take a look at the stunning floral displays inside the Cathedral ⬇ #CovResearch

  • Good news that Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) has started the process with The Consumer Goods Forum #SSCI to benchmark their standard and remain in the FSI Basket of Standards, social scope. With The Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (SIZA) and FSF Florverde Sustainable Flowers (Official Page) already re-benchmarked and Kenya Flower Council and Rainforest Alliance in process we see that the floriculture industry is taking their responsability to meet these references for good social practice, and is in so many ways already working beyond just compliance. For over 10 years now the FSI Basket of standards, including the SSCI benchmark, is supporting equivalence and alignment on what good social practice looks like, avoids duplication of standards, costs and time invested by producers and has market recognition by the 400+ members that include all major retailers. For them the standards in the FSI Basket are the preferred choice when sourcing flowers and plants. https://lnkd.in/ewVBaiyU
