This prize recognizes a researcher for his career and major discoveries in the treatment of #osteoarthritis. Congratulations to Sophie Bekisz, who was awarded a mobility grant from the The Osteoarthritis Foundation/Fondation Arthrose. Sophie is working in Pr. Liesbet Geris's laboratory (Biomechanics Research Unit, GIGA Molecular and Computational Biology, ULiège) to perform a PhD on in silico #lymphangiogenesis. She develops numerical and organoid models to better understand the biological dysfunctions of #lymphatic #endothelial cells (LECs) in #bone and #cartilage pathological conditions. Indeed, while angiogenesis has been studied extensively in skeletal tissues, the presence of lymphatic vessels has long been ignored. However, given the role of lymphatic vessels in #inflammation, there is growing evidence suggesting that the disruption of the lymphatic system is a key element in the progression and development of #osteoarthritis.
