At a time of substantial national, regional and global challenges to democracy and to the resilience of parliaments (as well as to their capacities to meaningfully engage civil society and citizens), the Global Governance Institute (GGI) is implementing a new project for the European Parliament, in cooperation with Ecorys Poland, on "Enhancing Democracy through Parliamentary Capacity-building in EU Accession Countries". The project provides a comprehensive analysis of capacity-building approaches of major international organisations, the parliaments of EU member states as well as initiatives by EU institutions and NGOs in order to strengthen national parliaments in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Türkiye and Ukraine as well as Kosovo. A comprehensive mapping exercise and more than 80 interviews with core stakeholders will identify best practices from organisations such as the UNDP, Council of Europe, OSCE, Inter-Parliamentary Union, NATO Parliamentary Assembly and NGOs such as Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), National Democratic Institute (NDI), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and more. GGI's William Lippert argues that INTERPOL has maintained its role amid deepening interstate rivalries, even fostering collaboration despite geopolitical divides such as the Russo-Ukraine crisis and the inclusion of Palestine as a member. Nevertheless, the incoming SG will face unique hurdles as great power rivalries intensify, especially around complex issues like war crimes allegations that intersect with INTERPOL's mandate and neutrality principles. 🔎 Read the full commentary to delve deeper into the implications for INTERPOL's future governance here: https://lnkd.in/eZUBQFNc
