  • 🇪🇺 Decarbonising European national healthcare systems is key to addressing rising greenhouse gas emissions and the effects of climate change on public health. Based on our experience partnering with national and subnational health authorities, we're launching a policy brief that provides actionable recommendations for designing decarbonisation roadmaps for healthcare systems. This brief was created as part of Operation Zero, a project aimed at guiding European healthcare towards net zero emissions with a groundbreaking methodology for calculating carbon footprints, modelling emissions trajectories, and establishing the necessary governance, in line with international climate commitments. Read it now to see our actionable recommendations to national and sub-national health systems, ministries of health, and other governmental organisations. • HCWH Europe is proud to have partnered with Belgium to develop their newly published report on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the country’s health sector, as well as a decarbonisation roadmap. The report was published as a result of the National Environment and Health Action Plan and consists of three documents: ✳️ An overview of GHG emissions from the health sector. ✳️ A roadmap outlining decarbonisation pathways and carbon reduction interventions. ✳️ An Implementation Framework with recommendations around governance, progress monitoring and possible areas for action. The reports were developed in the context of Operation Zero, a project designed by HCWH Europe to put the European healthcare sector on the path to net zero emissions. • 💊 According to the European Commission, it is estimated that up to 90% of the orally administered dose of a wide range of commonly used pharmaceuticals are excreted into the environment as active substances in the faeces and urine of humans and animals, even after metabolism. 🌱 Why does this matter? These pharmaceutical residues can harm ecosystems and contribute to antimicrobial resistance, threatening human health. To prevent this, healthcare facilities can ensure the proper use, disposal, and treatment of pharmaceuticals. 💻 The Safer Pharma PiE Database is a free open-access platform that brings together local, regional, and national research, working to address pharmaceutical pollution and pharmaceutical waste, especially in wastewater. By sharing best practices, regulatory efforts, and community-driven projects, we can move toward a future where pharmaceuticals no longer pollute our environment. Get involved: explore the database, discover what’s being done, and see how you can contribute. https://lnkd.in/eeWnR2DH

  • 📊 Did you know? Around 80% of antibiotics used in European animal farming are sold in forms suitable for group treatments. Despite a 53% reduction in veterinary antibiotic sales between 2011 and 2022, the EU can go one step further by restricting the unnecessary use of critically important antibiotics, such as colistin, in farming. Our report calls for stronger antibiotic regulations in food production to tackle antimicrobial resistance. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eVBiabKC
