4 January is World Braille Day, the universally recognised writing system used by blind or visually impaired people that helps them to achieve not only independence, but also success.
Braille is more than a writing system – it’s a tool for independence and success for people who are blind or visually impaired. For Peter Hendricks, a math and physics teacher from the Netherlands, it became a lifeline after he lost his sight. Learning braille allowed him to regain confidence and build a new career supporting the production of educational materials for students who are blind or visually impaired. Since the creation of braille 200 years ago, this writing system has been transforming the lives of countless individuals, offering a bridge to literacy and opportunities. The Accessible Books Consortium (ABC), led by WIPO, works to ensure that educational materials and books in embossed and electronic braille become available across the globe, laying the foundations of educational and economic success for persons who are blind or visually impaired. As Peter puts it, "Braille is a window to the world." On World Braille Day, let’s celebrate the transformative power of braille and support efforts to make it available to all who rely on it. During my last mission this year, I had the privilege to visit colleagues from the Association of American Publishers (AAP), the USPTO and the U.S. Copyright Office, together with IFRRO's President Tracey Armstrong and Catherine Zaller Rowland, Vice President and General Counsel at Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), in Washington, D.C. A big thank you to Shira Perlmutter and Maria Strong from the U.S. Copyright Office, Linda M. Quigley and USPTO colleagues, Maria A. Pallante, Lui Simpson, Terry Hart from the Association of American Publishers (AAP), for our inspiring and insightful discussions about copyright, collective management and AI. Looking forward to continuing our discussions and collaboration in 2025! Thank you, Tracey Armstrong, for being such an inspiration - and wishing all friends and colleagues Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and a great start into the New Year!
