This past month, irex Consulting participated in three key hydrogen events: • Belgian Hydrogen Council Conference (Brussels)  • European Hydrogen Week by Hydrogen Europe (Brussels)  • Horizon Hydrogène by Gazelec (Paris) Global Perspective Hydrogen is shaping up to be a truly global market. Success depends on international partnerships and ecosystems integrating the full hydrogen value chain. EU Trends The EU is driving hydrogen infrastructure with major pipeline corridors linking Europe to North Africa, aiming to decarbonize industries and transport while creating an integrated market. Belgium Positioning as a key hydrogen hub, Belgium is investing in import/export infrastructure (e.g., ammonia terminals) and fostering local production, market creation, and balancing mechanisms. France France’s €7 billion hydrogen plan targets decarbonizing transport and industry, aiming for EU leadership in hydrogen innovation. 🇪🇺 ⚡️𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 Since the liberalization of power markets, European countries have had the same pricing model, with most countries following a uniform national pricing model and some Northern countries having multiple pricing zones within their borders. Due to the increasing renewable production assets, congestion has become a major concern for grid operators to manage. One solution being evaluated by different governments is the move from uniform pricing to a zonal pricing model within their country. - Italy is confirmed to move to 6 pricing zones in 2025, - UK is planning to move to the zonal pricing model around 2030. The expectation is that the zonal pricing will help with (1) Grid congestion and (2) global economical benefit, while fears are that it could lead to (3) complex product offerings and (4) increased local prices.
