About us

What does vulnerability in #Migration #Detention mean? How is it identified across #Europe? How can we best accompany those most vulnerable in detention? That was the focus of our 18th Detention Visitor Support Group meeting. Hosted by JRS Malta, over 20 detention visitors from 8 countries met for discussions and workshops on #vulnerability criteria, #MentalHealth and Psychosocial Accompaniment practices, the impact of current legislation on Detention and the use of #StrategicLitigation. Overall the situation is not encouraging. The European Migration and Asylum Pact is expected to drastically increase the number of people in detention, especially at the borders of the #EU. This will make the already crucial work from Detention Visitors even more vital, since even if numbers increase Detention Visitors will likely remain one of the few, if not the only, people from outside the centres that migrants in detention can talk to. In addition, the local office in Malta offered a closer look at the Maltese context, especially looking into the deterioration of access to detention centres and increasing limitations to the services they can provide. • Giving refugees a voice On Saturday 16 November, the "Umbrella Refugee Committee" and JRS Belgium gave a training session to young refugees. Among them were numerous refugees who are already doing awareness-raising work as volunteers in our ‘Change’ school project. The goal of the training was to give refugees tools for effective communication (story-telling techniques etc.), public-speaking, voice, leadership hints and to run a workshop with students. Thanks a lot on our friends from the "Umbrella Refugee Committe" for an inspiring and hope-giving workshop!

💬💡 Recent teaching and training Last week I led a session on understanding the policy nexus between migration and environmental change with the students of the course 'Migration Governance' at the School of Transnational Governance. ➡️ We looked at available research evidence and its implications. We then discussed concrete case studies and available policy options to address the complex interplay between environmental change and human mobility. ➡️ Special thanks to the course coordinator, Lorenzo Piccoli, for inviting me! And congratulations on the excellent course. Always great to engage with students and executive training participants on this topic. Recently I also visited JRS Belgium in Brussels to guide an interactive session on EU migration policy trends as part of the organisation's strategic planning for the next five years. ➡️ Together with JRS Belgium staff, volunteers and board, we reflected on the challenges that are likely to arise from the New Pact reforms for the reception and protection of migrants. We also discussed what organisations like JRS Belgium could do to plan ahead, deal with legal and protection challenges, and keep accompanying, serving and advocating for refugees. ➡️ Special thanks to JRS Belgium Advisory Board for the invitation and to Nicolas Wéry for his contribution on the implications of the reforms for people in detention centres. Check out their latest report on the topic 👉 https://lnkd.in/d5dvDfpR 📸 1. • Hein de Haas at JRS Belgium JRS Belgium started its work on its new strategic plan today with the first thematic session around key issues of global migration. None other than Hein de Haas, author of the book “How Migration really works” was our external expert today, who gave us inspiring and crystal clear input for our thinking around the future direction of JRS Belgium. What will we take away from this session? That we want to communicate honestly and in a multifaceted way about migration without repeating myths that are not scientifically proven. That we should not underestimate the importance of our work in Belgian schools and detention centers and that we should talk more about this. That we are in a good position as JRS to talk about migration: Giving migrants themselves a voice to tell the human impact of (existing or non-existing) migration policies.

  • Arturo Sosa sj, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, visited JRS Belgium Father Arturo Sosa visited JRS Belgium on September 18th to learn first-hand about the essence of our work. As a great supporter of the commitment of JRS worldwide, this visit is also a clear sign of the recognition and appreciation of our work by the Jesuits. During his visit, Arturo Sosa also referred to the historical experience that countries that once sheltered refugees in great numbers have themselves become countries from which massive numbers of people flee - such as his own country of origin, Venezuela.

  • #DearEuropeanParliament, The current reception system is failing both asylum seekers and Member States at the same time. It is failing asylum seekers because, in many EU countries, asylum seekers are sleeping on the streets or surviving in inhumane conditions of overcrowded reception centres. At the same time, it fails Member States, because it places a disproportionate amount of responsibility for handling #asylum applications to the countries at the borders of the #EU. I believe in a #Europe that welcomes and I want you, European Parliament, to push for more hospitality and solidarity in Europe. That's why I'm going to vote in the #EuropeanElections2024 https://lnkd.in/er2ttTwy
