LiCalab op 𝐃𝐚𝐠 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐩 – Ontdek moonbuddy! 🌙 Op 𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐠 24 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 is het Dag van de Wetenschap, hét grootste wetenschapsfestival voor jong en minder jong. Ook Thomas More University of Applied Sciences opent hiervoor de deuren met tal van activiteiten op drie campussen: Geel, Turnhout en Sint-Katelijne-Waver. Ontdek de wereld van VR, lanceer je eigen raket, win de reanimatierace of doe eens een wedstrijdje tegen een robot. LiCalab is erbij op 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐆𝐞𝐞𝐥! We laten je kennismaken met moonbuddy, een ademhalingstool voor kinderen met klachten van (faal)angst of slecht inslapen. Stel, je wordt fysiek beperkt in je mogelijkheden, maar er zijn hulpmiddelen die je terug kunnen doen stralen - dan wil je die mogelijkheid toch exploreren? Dat is niet evident, want er is VEEL op de markt en een dienst preventie of HR, of zorgverleners zijn met HEEL VEEL bezig. Hack Kempen slaat de handen in elkaar met het Health & Care Network Kempen en geeft podium aan To Walk Again en Onderzoeksgroep Onderzoeksgroep Mobilab & Care om op een avond deze wereld even toe te lichten en open te trekken. Kom luisteren als ervaringsdeskundige, als zorgverlener, als leverancier. Maar evengoed als je bezig bent met electronica, mechanica, materialen, data ... Want we willen de avond afsluiten met een mini-brainstorm waarin we elke input verwelkomen, net uit heel diverse achtergronden. On November 18-19, FARI - AI for the Common Good Institute, organized by Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Université libre de Bruxelles, brought together over 500 academics, policymakers, industry leaders, and NGOs to explore how #AI can contribute to a more inclusive, ethical, and sustainable future.   Thank you to the organizers for this fascinating two-day event. Among the many interesting insights, we particularly remember these three takeaways: ✔️ Slow and thoughtful innovation matters: Prof. Mireille Hildebrandt, FBA urged that thorough AI research today will create faster impact in the long term. In this perspective 3 questions are key in every research: What problems can AI solve? What can't it solve? And what new challenges might it create? ✔️ Transparency and trust: Theresa Zueger highlighted the need for clear common language for AI that is designed for the public interest. These projects must meet 5 specific criteria: Accountability (is it the best and most sustainable way to solve the problem?), equity, can civilians participate, is there openness to validation and is it sustainable.   ✔️ Global lessons in ethical AI: Two model cities Tampere (Finland) and Montreal (Canada) showcased how participatory governance and inclusive practices can shape responsible AI innovation. In Tampere, 9 ethical principles guide responsible AI innovation. They were developed through participatory workshops with all stakeholders and apply to all employees, partners, and subcontractors. In Montreal, an AI charter is implemented, and the involvement of a citizen panel has proven to be a promising way to steer AI toward serving the public interest. At the heart of it all is a shared commitment to ensuring AI benefits everyone. The 8 Caring Technology Principles align perfectly with these values, offering a roadmap to foster trust, equity, and inclusivity in technology-driven innovation. 💬 Do you believe AI in healthcare can be developed and used responsibly while respecting ethical values? 🔄 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐮𝐧𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 🌍 Recent VRT NWS (https://lnkd.in/eQKw9-cU) revealed that 55 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 are gathering dust in Belgian homes. These devices contain valuable materials—metals, plastics, glass—that are crucial for Europe’s economy and could reduce reliance on environmentally damaging mining abroad. This challenge aligns perfectly with the goals of 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 Circular Digital Health (DiCE project) where LiCalab - Living & Care Lab is a proud partner. DiCE integrates circular economy principles into digital health technologies, promoting sustainable production and recycling of medical devices. 🔄 The connection is clear: both the circular economy and the healthcare sector must embrace 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 to recover critical resources. Unlocking the value of unused electronics is not only sustainable but also economically vital. 🔍 How can we scale these efforts? What a DiCE-year it has been!🚀 In 2024, the team laid the groundwork for impactful innovation. As living labs we: ✅ Organized small-scale pilots in preparation for large-scale studies across Belgium, Spain, and Slovenia in 2025. ✅ Shared our living lab expertise and tackled future challenges at international conferences on circular healthcare. ✅ Built new partnerships beyond the living lab sphere, opening doors to fresh, specialized knowledge. Good product and service design relies on collecting stakeholder insights. We need stakeholders to help us explore needs and contexts, co-create innovations, test potential solutions, and guide the implementation process. To support the Field of Responsible Research and Innovation, Tatiana Iakovleva, elin merethe oftedal, and John Bessant edited a new book: 📖 Meeting the Inclusion Challenge in Innovation. Giving Voice to Users. We contributed a chapter that focuses on: 🤝 how to build and maintain a sustainable user community or living lab panel 📫 user recruitment for end user research (e.g., sample size & characteristics) 👩🔬 good practices for data collection (e.g., protocol design, ethics, harmonisation across borders) 🛌 and includes a case study that started with a healthcare challenge definition (#sleeping problems) and contributed to the development of two innovations (including moonbird) and the establishment of a not-for-profit organization. 🔓 Our chapter and the rest of the book is available through #OpenAccess from De Gruyter Brill at https://lnkd.in/e4hspH-h (chapter) or https://lnkd.in/eRyXMhRn (book). Our contribution is grounded in a combination scientific literature and the experiences and knowledge from LiCalab - Living & Care Lab, which relies on over 10 years of experience in living lab research, memberships in ENoLL (European Network of Living Labs) & EIT Health, and many international collaborations (e.g., CrossCare 2.0, VITALISE H2020 Project, ACSELL Interreg Europe). We really enjoyed writing the chapter and hope that it can strengthen the research tradition in the field of end user research.
