With over 160,000 LSE alumni in more than 190 countries and over 80 active alumni groups, the LSE alumni community is a truly international one. The LSE Alumni Association Belgium is part of this global, vibrant network. The ties that bind Belgium and the School are strong. Every year, around 100 students from this country attend the School and an equal number of recent graduates come to work or continue their studies. A particularly popular destination is naturally the European Institutions, where many high ranking alumni also work. The creation of an alumni association was almost inevitable. Indeed, in 2007 Lieven Brouwers and Florian Köbele founded the LSE Alumni Association Belgium which is based in Brussels. Ever since its inauguration, it functions as a hub for alumni coming from all parts of Europe and beyond. Its motto “Meet, Debate, Explore.... In the heart of Europe” reflects its three guiding principles. From panel discussions to cultural and social events, the LSEAAB organises activities for every taste. It brings people together, helps them find new professional opportunities and forge lasting bonds. It also offers exclusive services, including an Alumni Directory and a career page. Working closely with LSE Advancement, it promotes the school’s spirit and academic work and helps maintain the strong bond between the alumni community and the School. It also functions as a platform for the promotion of close ties between the United Kingdom and the European Union. The association is run by volunteers. It is open to the wider society, and non-alumni can register as Friends of the LSE. There are currently over 900 registered alumni and friends. 🥇 Incredibly proud of our LSE alumni James A. Robinson (BSc Economics 1982) and Daron Acemoglu (PhD Economics 1992), who have today been jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences! Professors Acemoglu and Robinson share the award with Professor Simon Johnson from Massachusetts Institute of Technology for their work demonstrating the importance of societal institutions for a country’s prosperity, and why there are such vast differences in prosperity between nations. Societies with a poor rule of law and institutions that exploit the population do not generate growth or change for the better. Research by this year’s laureates helps us understand why. Congratulations to all three newly awarded Nobelists! 👏 #NobelPrize2024

Always a great pleasure to partner with the UK Mission to the European Union. Thank you for hosting us on such an important debate on the #greentransition and #sustainability. 🙏 Thanks to our fellow alumni who joined the discussion at the British Residence.
🌎 As the Foreign Secretary said a couple of weeks back at Kew Gardens “foreign policy, economic and industrial policy are becoming increasingly intertwined”. But how can the green transition drive growth and be sustainable? How can trade-offs be managed and synergies maximised? These were just a couple of questions our room of young thinkers sought to answer at the British Residence last night. 🙌 It was fantastic to have Anna Gumbau Martínez on board, as our event facilitator, who masterfully kept the energy and engagement high throughout the evening. 💭 During the discussion, we heard from four expert young thinkers, who each provided an example of sector-specific leadership addressing the event's core theme: ‘building the business case for a green transition’ 🔋 Emily Ritchey, from Transport & Environment (T&E) argued that the electrification of vehicles is a key factor in ensuring the just & green transition in Europe. This must include the onshoring of battery supply chains. ♻ Patricia Urban from CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies) discussed the importance of the circular economy in building the business case for the green transition, taking the example of circular batteries. 🌊 Soenke Jordan from Ocean Energy Europe concluded that renewable electrification will play a core role in achieving net zero in Europe by 2050 and ocean power will be a fundamental component. 🍃 Camilla Born MBE from E3G considered how far the UK has progressed over the last decade and the opportunities of offshore wind energy in accelerating UK-EU net zero commitments. 📣 We hope members of the audience also enjoyed the opportunity to respond to what they’d heard from the speakers and bring their own examples and expertise to the evening’s theme in a fun and interactive way. 🤝 Many thanks to our event partners, British Young Professionals in Brussels , CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies) and LSE Alumni Association Belgium. It was a pleasure to work together on this event. The UK will continue its commitment to putting climate & nature at the centre of our government missions.
