👇🏾 4 news of the week! 🇨🇫 Central African Republic: Challenging restructuring of the oil sector amid shortages and fiscal Crisis. The Central African Republic's oil sector is struggling after Total's exit in 2022, with high fuel prices, shortages, and declining tax revenues impacting the economy. Despite IMF-backed reforms, progress is slow, and reliance on costly road imports worsens the situation. If fiscal targets are not met, international financial support may be at risk. 🇨🇮 Ivory Coast: Laurent Gbagbo meets French Ambassador. Laurent Gbagbo met with the French ambassador on November 10, 2024, to restore communication broken since the 2010-2011 crisis. They discussed the economy, the Sahel, and the 2025 elections, but Gbagbo did not raise issues regarding his eligibility. The meeting was described as cordial and helps rebuild diplomatic ties. 🇳🇪 Niger: Starlink authorized to improve connectivity and support entrepreneurship. Niger has signed an agreement with Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite internet provider, to improve connectivity in a country with limited internet access. The affordable high-speed service is expected to boost local businesses. After initial security concerns, Starlink adjusted its strategy in Africa, negotiating directly with governments. While some countries remain hesitant, Niger becomes the 15th African nation to authorize Starlink. 🇸🇴 Somalia: US cancels $1.1 Billion in debt. Somalia announced the cancellation of $1.1 billion in debt by the US, about a quarter of its remaining debt. This is part of international efforts to reduce Somalia’s debt, which grew during the civil war and Siad Barre's dictatorship. The debt relief is part of the HIPC program, which has helped reduce Somalia’s external debt from 64% to less than 6% of GDP. While this improves access to financing, concerns remain over governance and political stability.
