Rewinding time to uncover a lost gem 💎✨ We had the incredible opportunity of being part of a project that brought a piece of history back to life! We collaborated with Sony Music to #digitise and #restore never-before-seen footage of the iconic Haydée Mercedes "La Negra" Sosa’s 1974 concert at New York’s Town Hall. 🎶 This undiscovered footage 📺 of the Argentine folk singer was recorded on the rare and fragile ½ EIAJ format, but with our team’s expertise and our extensive collection of vintage equipment, we were able to bring the footage back to life. The project wasn't just about expertise though, it was about honoring a cultural icon and ensuring her powerful voice🎙️continues to resonate for generations to come! You can watch a short documentary here about the project and the journey to uncover Mercedes' lost tapes: https://lnkd.in/gRqdqRxN #VideoArchiving #DigitalPreservation #HistoricalRestoration #MercedesSosa

We love hearing stories like this from our Memnon team! Our talented Director of Operations, overseeing the delivery of the Utaina project in New Zealand, Ben Whitney, recently shared a heartwarming experience with the legendary Ampex VPR-3 1-inch VTR. This iconic machine, once a cornerstone of TVNZ's Avalon Studios, is now back in our care thanks to Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision and is helping us #digitise valuable analog tapes.📼 Ben's story highlights not only the enduring quality of this remarkable technology but also the expertise and dedication of our team. At Memnon, we have the experience and equipment to handle a wide range of media formats, ensuring that your valuable assets are preserved for generations to come. We’d love to chat about your digitisation needs. Feel free to drop us a message 📩 or contact us here 👉 https://bit.ly/4g3EdS2 #AmpexVPR3 #MediaPreservation #AnalogToDigital #Technology #Digitisation
A Full-Circle Moment with the Ampex VPR-3 (VT12) Back in the 1980s, I had the privilege of working with the incredible Ampex VPR-3 1-inch VTRs at TVNZ’s Avalon Studios. A ground breaking piece of technology at the time, it can accelerate tape from 0-500 inches per second in under 1 second, and play 3-hour reels. With its air guides and pinch roller-free vacuum capstan, it was the only 1-inch VTR to provide that magical ‘instant roll.’ It quickly became a machine that on-line editors relied on. We had five of them at Avalon, and they were continuously used by Sports and Production game shows. As a maintenance technician, I loved every opportunity to service and support these workhorses. They were beautifully built and became an essential part of both my early career and the studio's daily operations. Fast forward to today, and I’m excited to say that ‘VT12', from my past, has decided to pay me a visit after 25 years. On loan from Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision, once again, it’s under my wing, helping digitize tapes from an era when analog was king. It’s a powerful reminder of how far technology has come, but also of how well these machines were built. To see it running again and hear that distinctive sound it makes, doing exactly what it was built for, is a truly special experience. It feels like welcoming an old friend back home. There’s something incredibly satisfying about breathing new life into the past while preserving it for the future. Here’s to the enduring legacy of great technology, and the lasting connections it creates—whether with the machines, the people, or the memories.

Preserving history needs a human 👆 touch. While technology like #AI can streamline #archiving, it will never be a complete replacement for human expertise and contextual decision-making. This human element is crucial for ensuring that stories are expertly safeguarded for future generations. In this TVNewsCheck article, our CEO, Heidi Shakespeare explores how #archivists are working hand-in-hand with technology, like AI, to protect our audiovisual heritage against rapidly declining legacy formats. Our CEO, Heidi Shakespeare, recently visited Memnon's state-of-the-art facility in Wellington, New Zealand, where the team is continuing to work hard to complete the Utaina! project. With 326,000 carriers digitised to date and now over 80% complete, the four-year project, which began digitisation in May 2022, has seen Memnon collaborate closely with the nation's archival agencies to protect and preserve hundreds of thousands of irreplaceable cultural assets held by Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision, National Library of New Zealand, and Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga. While at the Wellington facility, Heidi caught up with partners Honiana Love, Chief Executive, Kate Roberts, GM Preservation, and Richard Hulse, Chief Digital Officer, from Nga Taonga, as well as Jessica M. Moran, Chief Librarian at Alexander Turnbull Library, and Louise McCrone from Archives New Zealand to discuss the project’s progress and findings. We're thrilled to be part of this incredible project to digitally preserve audiovisual heritage material. Together, we're saving history and memories for generations to come. A big thank you to everyone involved. Ngā mihi! As we reflect on the past year, we’re grateful for our incredible team, valued customers, and supportive partners. 🤝 Together, we’ve accomplished remarkable feats, and we're not done yet! 💪 In the past year, we’ve provided estimates to migrate over 7 million hours of content for various projects, which would require over 7 million head hours. To put that into perspective, if we ran 100 lines of automated ingest, this would take us 11 years to complete. If this were ProRes422HQ in PAL (50% SD and 50% HD), it would be approximately 443 Petabytes. 🎉 We’re excited to see what 2025 brings and look forward to continuing our journey with an amazing team! ⭐ #HappyNewYear #2025 #Archives #Preservation #Grateful

Preservation, but make it ✨ Christmas ✨ As we near the holidays, we’re showcasing a Christmas movie classic that recently received a sprinkling of #restoration magic 💫 for new generations to enjoy.🎄 The heartwarming and uplifting ‘White Christmas’ (1954), starring Oscar-winning musical legends Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney, introduced us to one of the most beloved Christmas songs ever written, Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.” ❄️ To mark the film’s 70th anniversary 🎉 this year, Paramount Home Entertainment released the restored 4K UHD version on Blu-Ray which will be screened in select theaters this month. The project also included restoring the original mono track and creating a brand new 5.1 audio upmix. Restoration projects like these are invaluable. They not only offer a special trip down memory lane for some, but also shed light on culturally significant moments from the past for new generations. This ensures that video and audio assets are preserved for many more to enjoy in the future. Read more about the project here ➡️ https://ow.ly/GS3w50UtOVP
