About us
The Manufacturing Metrology Research Group @KU Leuven investigates, develops, optimizes and implements measurement solutions for manufacturing quality control. Our expertise covers surface and 3D coordinate metrology using tactile and optical probes as well as X-ray Computed Tomography (CT). We target Industry 4.0 readiness of measurement solutions by increasing speed, reducing measurement errors, and establishing traceability, to realize in-line and in-process capabilities with intelligent feedback inspection for first-time-right and zero-waste manufacturing. We put our expertise and state-of-the-art equipment at the disposal of manufacturing companies to address complex metrology challenges and to improve manufacturing process understanding and performance. Our History: The KU Leuven research activities on Manufacturing Metrology began about 80 years ago and were initiated by the founder of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Prof. Oscar Peters. Subsequently, Prof. Jacques Peters and Prof. Paul Van Herck made major contributions to the international state of the art with groundbreaking work on tactile surface metrology and measurement of machine tool misalignments. Coordinated by Prof. Jean-Pierre Kruth, the research group thereafter also addressed optical probing, which lead to the creation of two spin-off companies: Metris and Krypton Electronic Engineering. After a merger of both in 2005, the company was acquired by Nikon in 2009 to become what is now Nikon Metrology. Since Prof. Wim Dewulf and Prof. Han Haitjema joined the group, the activities have further expanded to include X-ray CT metrology and surface metrology. The group is strongly embedded in international networks through e.g. EU projects and membership in the CIRP - International Academy for Production Engineering.

🪧 Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the Flanders Make 2025 conference, marking the first one as Flanders Make PI for our group head, Prof. Wim Dewulf. It was inspiring to see the incredible work happening within the FM network, and we hope to have sparked new interest in manufacturing metrology research—especially the key role of industrial Computed Tomography (CT)! A big thank you to Koen Maertens and the FM team for organizing such a fantastic networking event. And of course, a huge shout-out to our researchers for their contributions: 📌 Negin Khoeiniha – Uncertainty quantification of XCT regularized reconstruction within the Bayesian framework 📌 Zhengrui Tao – Enabling multimodal sensor fusion in additive manufacturing using a voxel-based data model 📌 Simon Bellens – Deep learning reconstruction of few-view X-ray computed tomography measurements Looking forward to future projects and collaborations! #FlandersMake #ComputedTomography #ManufacturingMetrology #Innovation #Networking
Today is the 5th Flanders Make scientific conference in Leuven. A day, full of posters, coffee and - most of all - chats with brilliant minds, full of ideas to bring disruptive technologies to our companies! Very proud to kick off this event and to be part if this top team👏 #flandersmake #productivity #maakindustrie #innovation

🚀 Great news! Our PhD candidate Mirko Sinico has just published his latest paper—right in time before completing his PhD this month! 🎉 The study explores how powder particle size distribution (PSD) affects the surface quality of maraging 300 steel parts in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The findings show that finer powders significantly increase surface quality, reducing roughness (Ra) by up to 50 %. With further optimized processing, roughness can be lowered to just 1.5 μm Ra, unlocking also new possibilities for precision manufacturing and in-situ surface texturing. 📖 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d4WdXvWP Congratulations, Mirko! 👏🔬 #additivemanufacturing #LPBF #3DPrinting #materialsscience #manufacturing #metrology #surfacetexture #kuleuven

🔬 Wrapping up #iCT2025 📍 in Antwerp, Belgium! The Manufacturing Metrology KU Leuven had a great time at the 14th International Conference on Industrial Computed Tomography (iCT2025)—an event filled with interesting discussions on the latest CT developments. Our team actively contributed with both oral and poster presentations: 🏆 Negin Khoeiniha delivered a presentation on "Uncertainty quantification of CT regularized reconstruction within the Bayesian framework" and won the Silver Award for Best Presentation! Well done Negin! 📌 Xiaoya Chen presented a poster on "Total variation and shearlets amalgamated regularization inverse models with an automatic parameter selection procedure". 📌 Patricio Guerrero presented a poster on "Automatic and efficient reconstruction algorithms in computed tomography: a numerical optimization perspective". This year’s conference also marked the closing meeting of the Marie Curie xCTing Project—a pioneering initiative driving CT towards autonomous, high-speed, and in-line metrology for Industry 4.0. As coordinators, Prof. Wim Dewulf and Dr. Jun Qian bid farewell to the fellows, wishing them success in the completion of their PhD and following future careers. A huge thank you to Jan Sijbers and all the organizers and participants for making iCT2025 such an engaging and inspiring event. Looking forward to the next edition, which will be in Linz, Austria! Turning thirty is a milestone, so I want to make sure the birthday cookies for my colleagues are of outstanding quality. Naturally, I couldn't resist putting one of the frangipane cookies in the CT scanner to check its internal structure. 🍪🔍

Flanders Make keeps on growing! We are very proud to announce that two strong teams have joined the Flanders Make network, reinforcing our support for the industry! Davy Pissoort, leading ESAT's ‘Waves’ team in KU Leuven Brugge, has a vast experience in EMCD/RED related research projects, typically in close cooperation with industrial partners. One of his key research areas focuses on the dependability analysis for 'intelligent systems' going beyond mere safety considerations, offering broader insights into enhancing the overall resilience of autonomous (sub)systems, which is an important strategic research domain to enable the valorization of #AI driven technology by our industry. Wim Dewulf, Dean of the faculty of Engineering Technology of KU Leuven, has a team of more than 15 researchers focusing on manufacturing metrology, with particularly interest on how to use this technology inline. This lab has a unique set of instruments, including Xray CT devices and many other optical instruments to assess product and manufacturing process quality in research project or directly by our companies. Welcome to our Flanders Make team! Are you interested in our new services, technologies or simply, Flanders Make? Please Contact us for more information! #maakindustrie #flandersmake #vlaanderen

The Flanders Make Symposium took place on October 22nd at the Nekkerhal in Mechelen. With demonstrations showcasing cutting-edge technology, inspiring keynote speeches and ample opportunity to network, the event proved to be successful in bringing together industry experts and researchers in Belgium. I was part of the demonstration on 'Fast and automated 3D scanning for production inspection'. The challenge we address here is scanning without markers, even on cylindrical objects. The in-process measurements, along with decision support provided by a #knowledgegraph , can be viewed in real time by the operator on a Grafana dashboard. Thank you to the entire demo team for bringing this together Rob Salaets Sina Ditzel Pieter Lietaert Roeland De Geest Merijn Vangilbergen Lukas De Greve Kenneth Batstone
