At Liefmans, water is at the heart of every brew. That’s why they’re investing in a brand-new water treatment system to transform both city water and groundwater into softened process water of drinking-water quality. Here’s the challenge: 💧 The hardness of the city water is too high. 🚫 The groundwater doesn’t meet drinking-water standards. Nuoro is currently building a tailor-made water treatment system to tackle these challenges head-on. The milestone? The precise and careful installation of the large process tank - an essential component in the treatment system. For the third year in a row, we attended E-world energy & water! 🚀 Here are 3️⃣ key trends we spotted: 🔋Energy = data The energy market is becoming increasingly software-driven, with data playing a crucial role in optimizing efficiency and sustainability. ♻️ Biomethane on the rise This green alternative to natural gas is gaining momentum, with market players like TÜV Süd and Fluxys driving its adoption. ⚡ Nuclear in Europe’s future energy mix? We discussed with Fortum how nuclear could complement renewables. Costly and time-intensive, but potentially essential. And a fun side note: Nuoro wasn’t the only Sardinian name at E-world! We met Maddalena S.p.A. and discovered that La Maddalena is also a beautiful coastal town in Sardinia - a perfect match with Nuoro (and great food for KOEN 😉). #Eworld25, see you next year! #CleanWater #GreenEnergy

Our favourite teambuilding of the year so far 🤩

🌍 From Côte d’Ivoire to Nuoro – students are tackling water challenges in the world!    A few months ago, Siemen Libert and Ilias Coenen (students at UC Leuven-Limburg) have traded their classrooms for the field for three weeks - traveling to Côte d’Ivoire to support Nuoro in a water footprint analysis for SCC, a rubber factory of the Socfin Group.    Armed with test tubes, they: 🔬 built an on-site lab from scratch,  💧 conducted daily water sampling and analysis,  🧪 ran experiments to assess water quality and treatment processes.   They found out that: 🌊 river water is used to wash rubber cup lumps during the factory process, 📉 water footprint KPIs can be improved, reducing water usage per kg of rubber produced, ♻️ there are alternative and innovative effluent treatment solutions which could allow reuse in production. Thank you, Siemen and Ilias, for the great work and presentation last week! This is a promising step towards sustainable water management in the region. 💙

Trifluorazijnzuur (TFA) is een ultrakleine PFAS-verbinding, oplosbaar in water en zeer persistent in het milieu. 💡 Waar komt het vandaan? TFA ontstaat uit de afbraak van fluorhoudende stoffen, zoals bepaalde koelmiddelen en pesticiden. Ook komt het vrij bij de verbranding van PFAS. 💡 Wat kunnen we er aan doen? 👉Preventie: Perfluoro's horen niet in ons milieu. De kraan moet dicht aan de bron. 👉Monitoring & compliance: Strenge normen moeten de volksgezondheid beschermen. 👉Innovatie & technologie: Met de juiste technieken kunnen TFA en PFAS worden verwijderd uit drinkwater en afvalwater. Belangrijk is om hier ook te kijken naar destructie. Het probleem verplaatsen, is geen oplossing.
