Unlocking Sustainability in E-Waste Recycling: The PEACOC Project and the #NOVA Process The PEACOC project provides an exciting opportunity for the GeMMe to refine and scale up the innovative #NOVA process—a cutting-edge method designed to recover value from low- and mid-grade #PCBAs (printed circuit board assemblies). This process was developed with our partner Groupe Comet as part of the Reverse Metallurgy plan. By integrating electrochemical and mechanical activation techniques, this process not only separates electronic components from #PCBs but also generates a tin-rich concentrate. What makes this approach stand out? From low-grade PCBAs, often overlooked in traditional recycling, we are able to extract three highly valuable outputs: 🔹 Precious-metal-enriched electronic components 🔹 Copper-rich depopulated PCBs 🔹 Tin-rich concentrate By extracting these three fractions, which are simpler and more concentrated than the initial processed PCBAs, we create significant added value, opening the door to better resource management and enhanced sustainability. As the PEACOC project enters its final phase, our colleagues Paul André and Miguel Simão—will validate the design of a new prototype capable of processing larger batches (350 kg per cycle). This enhanced capacity will not only boost throughput but also produce enough precious-metal concentrate to supply the PEACOC pilot's refining stage. Many thanks to Groupe Comet for their technical support during this experimental campaign. Want to know more?
