💡Did you know that in 2023 Germany led in plastics recycling capacity in Europe, boasting between 2 and 2.5 Mt.? They were closely followed by Spain (around 2 Mt.) and Italy, the UK, and France, each with capacities between 1 and 1.5 Mt. Regarding the capacities per polymer and country: ➡️ PO Films: Spain has the highest recycling capacity in absolute terms, partly thanks to its agricultural sector, followed by Germany and Poland. ➡️ HDPE & PP: Spain, Germany, and Italy together represent 50% of the total HDPE recycling capacity. For PP, the leaders are Germany, Benelux, and Spain. ➡️ PET Recycling: Germany, Spain, Italy, the UK, and France dedicate 20% to 30% of their recycling capacity to PET. 🚨 Recent developments suggest significant rollbacks on critical recycling provisions in the proposal of the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR): ❗Minimum recycled plastic content requirement reduced from 25% to 20% ❗Closed-loop target cut drastically from 25% to 15% ❗Biobased and pre-consumer plastics are now considered in the recycled content calculation, undermining genuine recycling efforts and failing to enhance the circularity of ELV plastics These changes weaken our push for circularity in vehicle design. It is imperative to build stronger regulations that promote true sustainability in the automotive industry. How are non-plastic materials removed from Electrical & Electronic Equipment (EEE) during recycling? 🧐 First, EEE products are shredded into smaller pieces so they can be more easily separated from other non-plastic materials. For ferrous and non-ferrous metals this can be done with 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝗱𝘆-𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗖𝗦). Finally, WEEE plastics are ground into flakes, in order to increase the efficiency of the recycling process. Today, February 11, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) officially comes into effect, marking a groundbreaking moment for the plastics recycling value chain 🚀 This pivotal legislation offers a transformative opportunity for plastics recyclers and the entire plastic recycling value chain. If effectively applied, it can help improve recycling rates, fuel innovation in recycling technologies, and generate economic growth. The installed plastics recycling capacity reached 13.2 million tonnes (Mt) in EU 27+3 in 2023. With a year-on-year growth rate of 6%, there has been a drastic decrease from the 17% and 10% registered in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Diving deeper into the specifics, the installed recycling capacity varied by polymer type in 2023 ⬇️ • PO films reached almost 3.5 Mt of installed recycling capacity, followed by PET, which went up to 3.2 Mt. • Rigid PP and HDPE remained stable, while the installed capacity to recycle PVC was estimated to be over 1.1 Mt. • ELV-WEEE plastics registered a 15% growth rate, driven by the proposal to introduce new recycling content targets in the upcoming years and the interest from sectors that work with these polymers. • PS had an estimated installed capacity of over 100 Kt, with most of the input material originating from plastic packaging.
