What can we learn from African cities and how can we better cooperate with Africa? How can we develop the data and tools we need to expand our knowledge? How can we better anticipate risks and strengthen warning systems? 🇫🇷 The Presidents of UCLG's French membership — AFCCRE, Cités Unies France - Officiel France, and the Association Internationale des Maires Francophones  — have expressed deep concern regarding potential cuts to the Official Development Assistance budget in an open letter addressed to the French Prime Minister and members of the Assemblée Nationale. 📜 In the letter, they emphasize that “in a sensitive international context, the international commitment of local governments and their representative associations is a way of complementing state diplomacy.” 🌐 They also underline that “70% of the Sustainable Development Goals will only be achieved through local implementation, both here and elsewhere” and lament the lack of commitment to local and regional governments. 👏 UCLG stands in solidarity with its members, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for strong, sustained support for international development efforts. We remain vigilant in ensuring that the voice of local governments is heard and that their essential role is recognized and supported. #LocalGov #SDG

❗ ⚪ Cités Unies France : Communiqué conjoint CUF - AFCCRE - Association Internationale des Maires Francophones sur l’action internationale des collectivités territoriales et l’APD Paris le 16 janvier 2025 "Monsieur le Premier Ministre, Mesdames et Messieurs les parlementaires, Les collectivités territoriales françaises s’inquiètent vivement des baisses budgétaires de l’Aide Publique au Développement (APD) envisagées dans le précédent projet de budget. Celles-ci prévoyaient une baisse de plus d’un milliard d’euros de l’APD française et fait donc de l’APD française la ligne - en proportion - la plus affectée par les baisses budgétaires envisagées. Ce sont plus de 3000 collectivités françaises qui sont engagées dans des partenariats territoriaux avec leurs homologues dans plus de 120 pays. Les projets qui en découlent portent sur l’accès aux services essentiels, l’élaboration et le renforcement de politiques publiques locales, l’intégration des jeunes, l’autonomisation des femmes, l’adaptation et la lutte contre les dérèglements climatiques... Il est désormais reconnu que près de 70% des Objectifs de Développement Durable (ODD), dont le Sommet du Futur a rappelé qu’ils constituaient notre cadre global d’action, ne seront atteints que par des déclinaisons locales, ici et ailleurs.
