About us
Porometer is a German-Belgian company that focuses on developing and commercializing instruments to measure pore size distribution, gas and liquid permeability. Our porometers are very much appreciated by both R&D and quality control labs to characterize the pore size and the pore size distribution for media used in filtration and separation processes, such as polymeric and ceramic membranes – including flat sheet and hollow fibre membranes – , non-wovens, paper, porous rocks, etc. The gas-liquid porometers measure through pores in the range of 500 μm to 15 nm, while the liquid-liquid porometers can measure through pores down to 2 nm. Our porometers are built in Germany with some unique designed components to guarantee the most accurate measurement of pressure and flow. Typical applications include dialysis, desalination, battery separators, carbon nanofibers, personal care … Next to porometers, we also develop & manufacture instruments used for membrane synthesis and characterization, such as an automatic membrane/film casting machine (MEMCAST™), or liquid permeability tester. POROMETER also offers contract testing. Since our start in 2007, Porometer has produced and installed hundreds of instruments in a small market where our technology and support is highly appreciated by our customers all over the world. I'm closing the chapter of my life called "PhD". It has been a very long journey, but what I learned from being a researcher is that we have to consider various factors influencing the process. In the equation called my PhD, too many variables affected the duration and outcome of my journey. But I did it, and I'm pleased about it! On Friday 13, I defended my doctoral thesis, "Characterisation of woven filter media in solid-liquid filtration - The study of pore size distribution, air, and water permeability". I was privileged to have one of the most respected and well-known experts in Solid-Liquid Filtration and Separation, Professor Urs Alexander Peuker, from TU Bergakademie Freiberg. We had a great, top-level academic discussion, and I could not wish for a better opponent for my thesis. Associate Professor Sami Virolainen was the custos and the person who did his best to help me finalise the thesis. I'm immensely grateful to my supervisors, Riina Salmimies, Teemu Kinnarinen and Antti Häkkinen, for sharing their valuable knowledge with me and being my mentors. I'm thankful to awesome organisations, such as Whitehouse Scientific Ltd and Math2Market GmbH, and in particular to Andreas Wiegmann and Christian Wagner for their kind help and top-notch simulations made for my thesis. I owe a special thanks to all my colleagues from LUT: Paula Vehmaanperä, Dmitry Safonov, Mikko Huhtanen, Mohammad Golmaei, PhD, Miia John, Minna Nevalainen, Toni Väkiparta, Mikko Matikainen and my husband Ville Ängeslevä who made the day of my defence and Karonkka unforgettable and one of the best in my life.
