Want to know what mining really looks like today?🎙️Tune in for the new podcast episode: "From mineral exploration to sustainable mining: the future of critical raw materials"! Mining has come a long way from its traditional image. Today, the materials we extract are central to technologies powering everything from solar panels and wind turbines to smartphones, electric vehicles, and even medical devices like MRI machines and lithium batteries for mental health treatments. In the latest episode of the Pardon My Planet podcast, host Anne-Charlotte Costabadie (LGI Sustainable Innovation) speaks with experts Jamie Newall, CEO of Quest Critical Metals Inc. and partner in the EU-funded EIS_HorizonEU & Stéphane Bourg, president of the European association PROMETIA, about how Europe’s mining industry is transforming. From digital tools improving mineral exploration to more efficient, sustainable practices, this episode reveals how the future of mining is adapting to meet the world’s growing demand for critical raw materials. What’s covered in this episode: ✅The positive impact of digital tools on mineral exploration and discovery ✅The role of the Critical Raw Materials Act in securing Europe’s supply ✅The growing need for sustainable mining practices to meet rising demand ✅The importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and involving younger generations in reshaping the industry 🎧Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/eBVsyhSE or tune in on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Proud to share this key work on the removal of #lithium from waste water down to 1 ppm, by my colleagues at the KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals (SIM2 KU Leuven - research Group: SOLVOMET R&I Centre). The work was published in Green Chemistry and underscores SIM²'s track record in the field of #lithium #metallurgy. 👉 Why this paper? Lithium is becoming increasingly important for #lithiumion #batteries for the transition to clean energy and mobility. However, governmental agencies are demanding ever tighter normative discharge limits. The industry is still struggling to achieve the expected limits in waste water, which are likely to be below 10 ppm. Raiguel and colleagues have now developed a new method to precipitate lithium in the form of the lithium salt of a fatty acid (lithium soap). Very low lithium concentrations, down to 1 ppm, can be achieved by precipitation using choline soaps. These concentrations are far lower than those obtained using state-of-the-art precipitation methods, such as precipitation as lithium phosphate or lithium carbonate. 👉 Full reference of paper Stijn Raiguel, Dzenita Avdibegovic, Koen Binnemans, Removal of lithium from aqueous solutions by precipitation with sodium and choline alkanoate soaps, Green Chemistry 27 (2025) 1013-1017 The manuscript can be downloaded for free (gold open access): https://lnkd.in/e-VAnx5y 🙏 Acknowledgements Funded by the European Union (#ERC grant, CIRMET, Koen Binnemans, project number 101093943).
