📅 This week, the European Commission unveiled the long-awaited EU Omnibus package, a sweeping effort to streamline sustainability-related reporting. The promise? Less red tape, more business-friendly regulation. The reality? That remains to be seen. Here’s the twist: 🔹 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟱% (𝟯𝟱% 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗠𝗘𝘀), and 80% of companies will be freed from the most burdensome sustainability reporting under CSRD, CSDDD, and the EU Taxonomy. But while sector-specific reporting has been eliminated and compliance thresholds raised, some changes—like value chain due diligence limits—could create as much uncertainty as they resolve. 🔹 Companies that invested heavily in compliance 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 now that reporting is delayed for many firms and penalties under CSDDD have been softened. The shift in scope and postponements could also introduce market asymmetries between early adopters and those benefiting from the reset. 🔹 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 “𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, with key adjustments like the removal of EU-wide civil liability under CSDDD and the voluntary nature of certain Taxonomy disclosures. Critics argue this could weaken sustainability commitments and tilt the playing field in favor of laggards. Is this a genuine reset or a repackaging of the status quo? ⏰ It’s that time of the month for our EU Energy & Climate Policy Update! What a timing! The European Commission is moving fast, rolling out key initiatives that will shape the future of EU energy and industrial policy. In this edition, we take a closer look at the latest developments, including: ➡️ CBAM Simplification: border levies pushed to 2027, small importers exempt, and reporting streamlined to cut red tape while keeping carbon leakage in check. ➡️ Clean Industrial Deal: the EU’s new industrial strategy: €100B in funding, 100GW renewable capacity per year, and a drive for clean manufacturing & decarbonisation. ➡️ Affordable Energy Plan: focused on lower electricity costs, faster permitting, and grid expansion to protect businesses from future energy shocks. ➡️ Germany’s energy shift: a pro-nuclear, tech-neutral approach is on the horizon as CDU takes charge, likely influencing EU energy priorities. ➡️ US-EU trade tensions: Trump’s 25% tariffs on car imports could escalate into an EU trade war. 🕛 With the release of the European Commission’s Work Programme, it’s clear - we’re officially stepping into a new political cycle. Fresh faces, shifting priorities, and a new policy agenda mean that organisations must adapt their messaging to stay 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹. That’s exactly what we did with Fertilizers Europe before the start of a new political mandate. In a sector at the heart of food security and sustainability, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 with the EU institutions required a strategic narrative refresh🪴 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲. How many of you have faced internal challenges trying to get every team member aligned on a certain issue? In an association with a broad membership and different priorities, developing a unified narrative is no small task. Through hands-on workshops, we helped Fertilizers Europe craft a compelling story that 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗨 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆’𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀. If you recognise these challenges and feel your story needs a fresh perspective, get in touch with us at eu@publyon.com or send a direct message to our Communication Manager Daniela Brucoli.
