Understanding Corrosion and Fire Recovery The role of #PVCcables in fire scenarios is often misunderstood, particularly concerning the potential costs of corrosion versus the broader impact of fire damage. While some continue to raise concerns about corrosion costs associated with #PVC, real-world data from fire incidents suggests that the primary cost drivers lie elsewhere. Annually, post-fire damage reach vast sums in Europe and beyond, with the majority attributed to smoke removal rather than corrosion caused by hydrogen chloride (HCl) emissions. In actual fire conditions, factors such as high temperatures and smoke are the predominant causes of damage. HCl’s contribution is relatively minor compared to the immediate threats posed by intense heat and carbon monoxide (CO) levels, which often escalate before HCl reaches concentrations capable of causing significant corrosion. Sorting #PVC #Cables with Legacy Additives: A Technological Leap At the recent PVC4Cables Conference in Prague, Alessio Boscolo of Phoenix RTO presented a pilot plant under development in Italy. The plant uses X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology and NIR (near infrared) scanners for the detection and separation of end of waste containing lead, MCCPs and DEHP. The conference also revealed success in extraction of legacy additives from PVC cable #waste prior to conventional mechanical #recycling♻️ Discover more: https://lnkd.in/d7neQa2D #pvccables

PVC Cables: Driving Growth Across Key Industries Through Innovation and Sustainability Prof. Dr Maurizio Bragagni, Esq. OBE, MBA, CDir FIoD, CEO of Tratos Group, confirmed at our recent conference that PVC can play a leading role in present and future markets, and in rapidly developing sectors. According to estimates, PVC compounds for cables are expected to grow at an annual rate of 5.2% until 2030 at a global level. This thanks to the smart upgrading of the power transmission and distribution systems, but also to the strengthening of smart grids. Driving sectors will be construction, automotive, renewable energy and telecommunications. This of course provided that the #PVC cable industry is able to respond to the new global trends by continuing to focus on #innovation and #sustainability. https://lnkd.in/d7neQa2D #pvccables

  • Low Smoke Acidity PVC Compounds for Electrical Cables: Flammability and Smoke Production Versus Halogen-Free Options At the recent 4th PVC4Cables Conference in Prague, Laura Mazzocchetti of Università di Bologna underlined how in reality, and contrary to common perception, acidity is a secondary parameter in #firesafety. Carbon monoxide (CO) emerges as the leading threat in the effluents produced during a fire. Studies also reveal that the smoke production from #PVCcables can be significantly mitigated, almost aligning with #halogenfree #cables, through the strategic use of appropriate flame retardants and smoke suppressants. https://lnkd.in/d7neQa2D

Innovative Alternatives to MCCPs in #PVCCables: A Breakthrough in Fire Safety and Sustainability🧯🍀 At the recent PVC4Cables Conference in Prague, Prof. Cardelli Camillo, Senior Researcher, Scientific Coordinator and Co-Founder of iPOOL srl presented new findings on alternatives to Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs): “Our research shows that increasing the chlorine content in #PVC cable formulations, by using #biobased chlorinated esters instead of traditional chlorinated paraffins, significantly improves flame retardancy and cable performance into EN 50399 (CPR) burning test, while also improving environmental performance – a potentially groundbreaking discovery in #firesafety and #sustainability.” https://lnkd.in/d7neQa2D #cables
