New routes towards Sustainable Reuse and Recycling of Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs)

About us

Batteries reuse and direct production of high performances cathodic and anodic materials and other raw materials from batteries recycling using low cost and environmentally friendly technologies. Building on existing knowledge and previously developed robotic system, the project will demonstrate a smart sorting and dismantling robot at TRL 6, enabling the automation of a battery repurposing production line. When direct repurposing and reuse of batteries is not possible, RHINOCEROS will investigate several ground-breaking circular recycling routes aiming at the recovery of all the materials present in LIBs (e.g., metals, graphite, fluorinated compounds, electrolytes, polymers, and active materials). RHINOCEROS is a European project funded under the Horizon Europe programme with a budget of € 8.943.025,75 and coordinated by TECNALIA. With a consortium including 16 key partners, RHINOCEROS will make sure Europe develops closed material loops to ensure the security of supply after the ramp-up phase of battery market, mainly fuelled by the auto industry and the stationary applications. Funded by the European Union under Grant Agreement No 101069685.
