#PressRelease: Seas At Risk backs the EU’s vision of becoming the world leader in circular economy by 2030. But the #CleanIndustrialDeal misses the mark and fails to address the root causes slowing down progress: ineffective resource management and demand that overshoots planetary boundaries. 🌊 The #EuropeanOceansPact offers an opportunity to achieve a healthy ocean, for the benefit of both people and the planet. To succeed, the Pact must include transformative actions to achieve climate neutrality, zero pollution, and marine life restoration, while ensuring a just transition. 🌊 That was a central topic during today's #FisheriesandOceansDialogues. According to our Executive Director Monica Verbeek, that means... 👉 Advancing implementation and enforcement of *existing* laws and policies 👉 Strengthening policy coherence by introducing legally binding targets 👉 Enabling a just transition to a regenerative #BlueEconomy, with the creation of an EU Ocean Fund Great news! The #BlueManifesto already covers these priorities and provides the necessary roadmap to create a healthy ocean by 2030. 🗺️ See the roadmap and the Blue Manifesto online: https://lnkd.in/daZX93FD Costas Kadis Charlina Vitcheva
I had the honour today to speak at the High Level Roundtable on the Fisheries and Ocean Dialogue, alongside over 50 (!) other speakers. It felt very UN, but Commissioner Kadis for Fisheries and Ocean and Director General Vitcheva seemed admirably intent to listen to each and every intervention. While of course so many different stakeholders have different views, there was some clear convergence on what the upcoming EU Ocean Pact should be about: effective implementation of current legislation, coherence in policy with legally binding targets, and most of all the crucial importance of a healthy ocean as the basis for a sustainable blue economy. Points I agree with, as you can hear ☺️. These issues are also included in the Blue Manifesto, the vision and roadmap to a healthy Ocean by 2030: https://lnkd.in/gm4DHxQ7

Given the many gaps in knowledge, scientific uncertainties, huge risks and numerous policy gaps the study outlines, the title of the study is misleading. No way of upscaling technological CDR or CCS under such conditions, if the EU takes the precautionary principle seriously. Let's instead vastly upscale efforts to reduce emissions to real zero by 2040, shift to 100% renewables and restore and regenarate nature on land and in the ocean. It will be a win win for climate and biodiversity. Our best ever option for a livable future. We've known that for 50+ years and haven't even managed to properly upscale that... Today, the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change published its new report ‘Scaling up carbon dioxide removals – Recommendations for navigating opportunities and risks in the EU’. The Advisory Board recommends that the #EU: • separate targets for gross greenhouse gas #emissions, permanent and temporary greenhouse gas #removals, supported by robust monitoring; • increase #public support to urgently reverse the decline of the land sink, accelerate #innovation and infrastructure deployment; • gradually integrate permanent removals in the EU #ETS and introduce new pricing instruments to reward greenhouse gas removals in the land sector; • create new instruments to operationalise the extended emitter responsibility, achieve net-negative emissions and curb #climate change. Today, we (Frédérique MONGODIN) are at the European Commission's #EcodesignForum and we couldn't be more excited to be part of this expert discussion on the sustainable design of products in the EU. 💡🇪🇺 While we may be outnumbered by industry/business (just a little! 😉), we're here to raise important environmental and health concerns such as: 👕 Tackling the serious environmental impacts of #microplastics from textiles ☢️ Reducing fashion's toxic impact 🐟 Ensuring the effects on marine life and ecosystems are considered Prevention is the best way to protect ecosystems and human health, so we're glad to be at the table using #Ecodesign to stop these negative impacts before they start. Collaborative exchanges like these are vital to making a difference and ensuring a cleaner future.🙌 #Microplastics #MarineHealth #CircularEconomy

International Maritime Organization: This is a make-or-break year for #shipping to clean up its act. We need: 💸an ambitious levy 💚a shift to clean, zero-emission fuels ⚓energy efficient vessels. It is time for the shipping dinosaurs to leave the fossil-fuel era behind and focus on alternative solutions.

Love is in the air... and in the sea 🥰 This #ValentinesDay, we'll skip the flowers and chocolates but we'll continue to love, care for, and protect our ocean. There's plenty of fish in the sea, and we hope to keep it that way! 🎣 Send a card to someone you love as much as we love the ocean 🫶 💌 Happy Valentine's Day from Seas At Risk 💙
