📢 90 years of Excellence: Project 3 - When hospitals go vertical 🚀 The ZNA Cadix, located in Antwerp's "Eilandje" district, is a vertical hospital structure bridging the park, docks, and city. Organized in layers, the ground floor opens as a public healthcare boulevard for pedestrians and cyclists, with motorized traffic managed underground. Characterized by a formal yet welcoming design, the building integrates abundant daylight, interior gardens, and outdoor spaces. A central spiral staircase adds organic movement. The striking green glass mosaic on the facades, combined with large glass surfaces, gives the building a unique appearance. ⚙ SECO’s decades of facade expertise ensured an optimal solution. For over 90 years, SECO has contributed to hospitals across Belgium, including Sint Niklaas, Oudenaarde, UZ Gent, Poperinge Maria Hospital, and AZ St Maarten Mechelen. 📢 90 years of Excellence – Project 4 : From past to future | Transforming Antwerp’s port infrastructure Royers lock (Royerssluis) is a tidal lock located at the junction between the River Schelde and the Albert Canal, facilitating heavy maritime traffic. 🚢 In 2021, major renovation and enlargement work began on the inland navigation lock to accommodate modern ships, with completion expected by late 2028. Despite the restricted space and surrounding heavy infrastructure, all measures are taken to ensure ships can still pass safely during the construction. ⚙ SECO’s role: SECO accompanies all parties involved by acting as the technical controller for stability and coordinating the overall project’s safety measures. As a third-party technical advisor, SECO helps implement a range of solutions, including the following: ✅ Integration with the nearby Oosterweel Tunnels, given their proximity to the lock. ✅ Mitigation of the lock’s construction impact on the environment, including protecting the classified ‘Sluismeesterwoning’ building within a safe perimeter. ✅ Implementation of temporary impact protection for the lock during construction to prevent ships from colliding with the walls. 🔍 90 years of Excellence - Project 5: SECO’s Role in the Iconic Europa Building 🏗 The Europa building, located at the center of the EU district in Brussels, is an innovative and sustainable architectural marvel. About 40% of the building is formed by parts of the Résidence Palace, a listed art deco complex from 1927. With the construction of the Europa building in 2011, the Résidence Palace was renovated and extended, preserving its original facades, entrances, and the central ground-floor corridor. The center of the new Europa building consists of a unique lantern-shaped metal structure, symbolizing the “heart” of Europe. This structure is encased in a new double façade, made of transparent walls (of the atrium) and an external metallic façade comprising a patchwork of oak window frames reclaimed from demolition sites across nearly all EU member states. The design of the building symbolizes the EU motto “United in Diversity” and celebrates the craftsmanship of the member states. ⚙️ SECO’s role: The construction of the Europa building came with technical challenges that SECO understands very well as trusted third party in charge of the overall technical control. Alain Barthelemy provides further insights into these challenges behind what he describes as ‘the kind of projects you can be proud of as an engineer!’. ▶ Preservation of the existing building The need to preserve, restore and integrate part of the Residence Palace was a challenge but also a wonderful opportunity. The foundations of the floors of Résidence Palace had to make way for the Schuman railway tunnel, constructed underneath. To enable a tunnel to be dug, the building was suspended from four 8-meter-high, 22-meter-long steel beams. SECO paid particular attention to design and construction supervision during delicate phases of this mission, such as preliminary consolidation, demolition of the foundations and suspension of the building. Collaboration with all parties was essential, as it required reconciling different aspects that are not necessarily convergent: stability, technical execution, financial considerations, planning & architecture. ▶ Structural works for the new Europa building The project review for the new Europa building was a significant undertaking due to the complexity and height of the metal structures. SECO meticulously followed regulations for tall structures and closely monitored the fabrication and assembly of the lantern’s metal framework both in the factory and on-site. Fire resistance standards of the building required thorough consideration too, with innovative solutions like fuse-designed connections in the lantern ring beams to prevent flame escalation. For 9 decades, SECO has consistently pushed the boundaries of what's possible in engineering.
