SIPEF Banana Plantations J. EGLIN in the News... Thanks Fairtrade Africa for the visit!

Yesterday, I had an incredible experience thanks to Fairtrade Africa and the amazing team we’ve been engaging with since the beginning of the week. I had the chance to visit one of the most impressive banana plantations I have ever seen—Elgin Banana Plantation just outside Abidjan. With 1,350 hectares of land and over 58,000 metric tonnes of bananas produced annually. Côte d'Ivoire, the largest producer and consumer of bananas in Africa, plays a critical role in the global agricultural sector. Agriculture contributes 23% to the national GDP, provides over 65% of the country’s jobs, and accounts for 60% of exports and Elgin plays a major role in this thriving sector. Their entry point to “doing good as good business” began with obtaining Fairtrade certification in 2019. This commitment to sustainability has enabled them to create value through social impact, environmental stewardship, and economic growth. With 2,500 employees, Elgin prioritizes worker welfare, human rights, and strong working conditions. Environmentally, they focus on water resource management, waste management, and solar power. With 85% of their bananas exported to the UK and EU, Elgin leverages Fairtrade certification to access premium markets. Their 2023 integrated sustainability report underscores their transparency and commitment to continuous improvement, showing how these practices drive business growth. 🔔 En complément du service historique de CMA CGM, EURAF1, Dunkerque-Port et le TERMINAL DES FLANDRES ont récemment accueilli un nouveau service MSC hebdomadaire conteneurisé depuis la côte occidentale d’Afrique. 🌍 Désormais, Dunkerque est connecté de manière hebdomadaire ou bihebdomadaire à l’import comme à l’export à Tema (Ghana), Lomé (Togo), Tincan et Apapa (Nigeria), Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) et Dakar (Sénégal) ainsi qu’aux pays enclavés comme le Mali et le Burkina Faso. 🍌 Ce jour, en compagnie des responsables de MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, Axel Van de Velde et Annick OKENI nous avons visité les plantations de banane Jean Eglin du groupe SIPEF . 🙏 Merci à son Directeur Général Charles De Wulf et son responsable logistique Donatien, ainsi qu’à toutes leurs équipes opérationnelles de nous avoir fait visiter l’intégralité des étapes de production de la banane, du sevrage à l’empotage des conteneurs frigos.
