There it stands! After more than a decade in storage, the cardboard Paperdome has been relocated and will serve as a youth sports venue in Amsterdam Southeast for the coming years.
The demountable dome structure, with a span of 30 meters, consists of cardboard tubes connected by steel nodes. A canvas is stretched over these tubes.
The first time we built the Paperdome was 20 years ago, in 2004, in IJburg, the Netherlands. There, the dome was used for dance performances. Shortly after, we moved the dome to Leidsche Rijn where it functioned as a multifunctional space. In 2012, we dismantled and stored it.
Octatube and Octatube Services are extremely proud to have been able to reassemble this remarkable circular structure for the third time, and that thanks to Gemeente Amsterdam it has found a new purpose.
Stichting 3X3 UNITES together with Stichting hartvoordekbuurt, neighbourhood partners, and initiatives, will organize free sports and exercise activities for young people, including 3x3 basketball.
The Paperdome will open for use in February 2025.
