[CARBON REMOVALS] Why is the certification framework for carbon removals good news for the European timber industry? It sends a clear signal that carbon stored in wood products in the built environment has been recognised by the EU as a whole (the Commission, the Parliament & the Council) as being one of the most effective ways in which we can remove carbon from the atmosphere and safely store it!
Author: Timber! How wood can save the world from climate breakdown. Published June 2024. Director Public Affairs @CEIBois, EOS & @TimberDevUK. Former MEP.
Today the European Council gave the green light to the certification framework for carbon removals which includes carbon storage activities that capture & store carbon in long-lasting products for at least 35 years such as wood-based construction products. This is good news for the European timber industry as it sends a clear signal that carbon stored in wood products in the built environment has been recognised by the EU as a whole (the Commission, the Parliament & the Council) as being one of the most effective ways in which we can remove carbon from the atmosphere and safely store it. In fact the built environment's ability to store carbon in both new buildings and in renovations is immense if nature-based materials are used, as I point out in my book, 'Timber! How wood can help save the world from climate breakdown': "For instance, a 2021 report from ASN Bank and Climate Cleanup stated that there was the potential in the Netherlands to use the projected one million new homes required before 2030 to store 50MtC" of carbon. p18. https://lnkd.in/ex6S9k93 Council press release here: https://lnkd.in/eMR6w77V

[CARBON REMOVALS] 🟢 Council adopts Regulation for an EU Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF) This voluntary framework seeks to facilitate and encourage high-quality carbon removal and soil emission reduction activities in the EU, as a complement to sustained emission reductions. The carbon removal activities falling under the CRCF include carbon storage activities that capture and store carbon in long-lasting products for at least 35 years (such as wood-based construction products). 👉 More information: https://lnkd.in/d-spYzJT 👉 Adopted text: https://lnkd.in/dSnkUgcs The regulation will now be published in the EU’s Official Journal and enter into force 20 days after its publication. It will then become directly applicable in all EU Member States.

[EUDR] EU Parliament backs 1 year delay of EUDR and proposes ‘no risk’ category The European Parliament endorsed today the European Commission’s proposal to delay the application of the EU’s Deforestation Regulation by one year. The Parliament also proposed the creation of a new “no risk” category for countries with stable or increasing forest area development. The Parliament adopted the proposal to delay the regulation by one year with 371 votes in favour and 240 votes against. Now, both parliament and EU countries must agree on a final version of the postponement proposal before the 30 December 2024. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKVxjhBc
