Greater robotization reduces the negative effects of unfavourable demographic change—in particular, population aging. This was one of the key conclusions of a 2023 blog of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) linked to fargoing research. It states that robots can substitute for manual labour in tasks where automated machines are more productive than humans, thus complementing workers’ skills and increasing workers’ productivity. Greater robotization does reduce the negative effects of unfavourable demographic change—in particular, population aging which is a hot topic in China but also in Europe in the near future. Richer and older advanced economies are characterized by higher degrees of automation of production processes, as measured by the number of industrial robots per one thousand employees but only three economies have enough robots to completely offset the impact of aging on labour productivity growth in 2015: Germany, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.
