The UN Refugee Agency in Belgium & Luxembourg. Providing aid and protection for #refugees & forcibly displaced people.
About us
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, leads international action to protect people forced to flee because of conflict and persecution. We deliver life-saving assistance like shelter, food and water; help safeguard fundamental human rights; and develop solutions that ensure people have a safe place to call home where they can build a better future. In Belgium and Luxembourg, UNHCR focuses on safeguarding the principles of refugee protection in the legislation and asylum procedures. In collaboration with the authorities, we also work on resettling refugees to Belgium. 📢 Training on Statelessness in Belgium 🇧🇪 This Thursday, UNHCR, in collaboration with its implementing partner NANSEN vzw/asbl, organized an insightful training on statelessness. This event brought together 60 participants—including representatives from asylum instances, lawyers, and NGOs—to discuss crucial topics such as the prevention of statelessness and the rights of stateless people in Belgium. 🙏 A big thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the fruitful discussions. ✨ A special thanks to Wout Van Doren for sharing his expertise and enriching the exchange with his valuable insights.

💡 This Wednesday UNHCR gave a training to the 'Mobile Teams', refugee volunteers who provide support to homeless asylum seekers in Brussels. Why? Because the Mobile Teams, as part of the work of the Umbrella Refugee Committee and Ukrainian Voices Refugee Committee, help ensure that access to information, to a shelter, to medical and social aid, and to legal aid are guaranteed for all asylum seekers, also single men sleeping in the streets.

🗣️ “Have we lost sight of the shared responsibility we have to protect the most vulnerable?” As we reflect on the year 2024, our Representative Jean-Nicolas Beuze underscores the ongoing and escalating challenges faced by forcibly displaced people around the world. With winter fast approaching, many, including those in Belgium, are facing increasingly difficult conditions. It is a stark reminder that protecting the most vulnerable among us requires collective action, compassion, and continued support. Let’s not forget our shared responsibility to those who have been forced to flee their homes. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dmwtsgmh #WinterAid #SharedResponsibility #UNHCR

❌ Lack of information ❌ Lengthy procedures ❌ Administrative hurdles These challenges continue to keep many refugee families apart. Today, we had the opportunity to join the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC's EU-funded REPAIR Project event. Projects such as this play a vital role in helping refugees overcome these barriers and reunite with their loved ones. 🌍🤝 A big thank you to all the partners and stakeholders involved for their dedication to advancing this important cause. 🚨 Empowering Refugee Support Teams: Training Completed in Brussels We are proud to have completed an important training for Refugee Committee Centres staff in Brussels, who work tirelessly to provide shelter for asylum seekers and refugees. The focus of this training? Preventing and responding to sexual misconduct to ensure shelters remain safe, supportive, and free from any form of sexual exploitation and abuse. This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible collaboration and commitment of our partners. A heartfelt thank you to the Umbrella Refugee Committee, Ukrainian Voices Refugee Committee, the Afghan Refugee Committee, the Iraqi Refugee Committee, the Burundi Refugee Committee, the Women Refugee Committee and the Rainbow Refugee Committee, in making this training a success! Together, we are building safer spaces and stronger support systems for those who need them most. 💙 #UNHCR #RefugeeSupport #SafeSpaces #Partnerships

🌍 The European Union's legal system is a cornerstone for safeguarding fundamental rights and upholding the rule of law. 🇪🇺 At Academy of European Law ERA's Conference on European Asylum Law, our Legal Officer emphasized the critical role it plays in protecting refugee rights. 🔹 From court interventions to capacity-building training, we are dedicated to supporting authorities, lawyers, and judges in their efforts to uphold these vital protections. 🌿 New mechanisms that go beyond typical grantmaking to bring more sustainable and effective resources for the benefit of forcibly displaced populations and host communities. This is what we discussed today at the Impact for Breakfast in Brussels. Thank you to everyone who joined us early in the morning to explore these innovative finance solutions for refugees. Huge thanks to Kapil Kanungo (Incofin Investment Management) for spotlighting the work of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and to everyone who contributed to the exchange with Siddhartha Sinha, our Head of Innovative Finance. And a special shoutout to Ukrainian Voices Refugee Committee for going above and beyond with delicious Ukrainian treats 🇺🇦, even during a power outage! The event would have not been possible without the involvement of Impact Finance Belgium, Riqqah Haniyah, Vittoria Volgare Detaille, Ruben Fierens, Juan Camilo Blanco, Pavlo Koshka. #impactinvesting #innovativefinance #humanitariansatwork #withrefugees #philanthropy #impactbonds #carboncredits
Innovative Finance and Breakfast with UNHCR Belgium & Luxembourg 🥞 This morning, we had an Impact for Breakfast with Siddhartha Sinha from UNHCR Belgium & Luxembourg which discussed their Innovative Finance Approach. There are two examples of their approach: 1️⃣ Green Financing Facility - an innovative project that supports the UNHCR offices to transition from diesel generators and fossil-heavy energy grids to solar energy. This can be done via a guarantee-based mechanism self-sustaining or a revolving fund model. 2️⃣The Refugee Environmental Protection Fund invests in impactful reforestation while enabling access to clean cooking programs in climate-vulnerable refugee situations. Based on this session, we learn that: 🔹There are negative implications (to the people and the planet) that are overlooked 🔹There are many innovative solutions but if there is no plan then there is no resources and support 🔹If you have a plan do not overcomplicate it Thank you to Kapil Kanungo and Vittoria Volgare Detaille for this opportunity and organising this breakfast🎁 Diane Delava Solène Collin Riqqah Haniyah Wendy Braeken Frédéric Madry Steven Serneels Pierre Harkay
