Our biggest challenges cannot be solved alone. Here at UNU-CRIS, we produce interdisciplinary research on policy challenges that require cross-border and multi-level governance and cooperation. What drives us is how we can better work together across borders and disciplines to produce solutions in policy areas such as migration, digital, climate, health, economics, and trade, as well as the study of how supranational, national, and subnational governments and organisations can improve. Learn more about us, our research and training opportunities, and how you can get involved by visiting our website. Think your network would be interested too? The UN's research centre for policy challenges that require cross-border and multi-level governance and cooperation.
About us
The Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies is a United Nations research centre. We produce interdisciplinary research on policy challenges that require cross-border and multi-level governance and cooperation, and offer training programmes based on that expertise. UNU-CRIS is based in Bruges (Belgium) at the premises of the Grootseminarie, thanks to the generous support of the Province of West-Flanders. It receives its core funding from the Flemish Government and collaborates with the College of Europe (Bruges) as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding, instituting their institutional collaboration. As a UN Agency, UNU-CRIS is also a member of the UN Brussels Team.

On Tuesday, at the Internet Governance Forum in Riyadh, we will discuss the role of regional organisations in shaping global internet governance. From 09:45 local time (GMT +3) We shall be in Workshop Room 4, and online at https://lnkd.in/eg-2xUHU. Come and join in the conversation to help get a better grasp on the link between regional and global internet governance, with our highly knowledgable speakers! [1] From relatively early in the Internet's development, technical governance processes, like the Regional Internet Registries, have emphasised a regional approach to Internet Governance, allowing local communities to develop policies suited to their specific circumstances and challenges, while maintaining global coordination on essential elements. A vibrant network of national and regional Internet governance initiatives (NRIs) embody this regional approach. There are now more than 170 NRIs around the world, the majority of them in the Global South, defined by their multistakeholder, bottom-up approach. As explored in the recent 'Net Effects' paper [2] by the DNS Research Federation, these structures provide local communities space to discuss and influence governance approaches and decisions at the local, regional, and global level. NRIs also serve as a vital space to foster and develop new leaders and informed governance participants for global discussions. At both the UN Global Digital Compact and the 20-year review of the WSIS, the need to recognise and support regional structures has been emphasised. We shall ask our experienced participants [1] to discuss three main questions, and be writing these up in our shared doc [3]: 1) How relevant is the regional concept for understanding the IGF or the multistakeholder world? How is regional actorness evolving? 2) Will regions be building blocks for a new multilateralism or multistakeholderism? 3) For which policy challenges are regional organisations better equipped to tackle than international organisations like the UN? Training early career scientists to centre policy from the outset is crucial for impactful research. At our Doctoral Researchers Symposium at United Nations University-FLORES , we were happy to have Andrew Dunn from United Nations University - CRIS add an invaluable layer of expertise and perspective. His feedback encouraged our doctoral researchers to think critically about how their research could transcend the academic realm and influence real-world policy. This symposium was not just about presenting research — it was about crafting narratives that can influence policy and drive change. Throughout the three days, participants engaged in collaborative group efforts, turning complex research into actionable policy briefs. Thanks to Andrew Dunn feedback on every group’s craft, the final pitches were filled with pride and passion. As the groups presented their policy briefs, I was inspired by their dedication and passion — all of which are necessary to advocate for scientific findings leading to informed policies that resonate with societal needs. #ResourceNexus #Sustainability
