Healthy animals, healthy people, healthy planet
About us
In Africa, millions of people depend on their livestock. Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium is developing animal health care there along with the local population and supporting agro-ecological livestock keeping. Together, we use training, equipment and medicines to keep their livestock and the surrounding environment healthy, so that the people can live their lives in dignity. Our special attention to the health of ecosystems also reduces the risk of diseases crossing from wild animals to humans and livestock. In this way, we help to prevent pandemics such as Covid-19 and Ebola. Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium helps livestock keepers in nine African countries to build a better future. That future begins with healthy animals. But we do more than just vaccinating and taking care of herds. We help the population to improve their livestock farming and everything that is connected to it. From microcredits, sales, water and pasture management to training, agricultural equipment, emergency aid, peace negotiations and advocacy. Our vision: healthy animals, healthy people, healthy planet. Our mission: to optimise livestock farming in order to improve the well-being of disadvantaged populations in the South. We are active in Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Benin, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. We are a member of VSF International.

From hunger to recovery: the power of goats in Burundi 🌍 In Burundi, the food security of 9 out of 10 people is at risk. Depleted land due to over-intensive farming leaves families uncertain about their next meal. 🤝 In collaboration with its local partner UCODE-AMR, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgique wants to offer these vulnerable families a new beginning. To achieve this, we are focusing on a holistic solution: by distributing goats, we not only restore the fertility of the land, but also build a better future without hunger. Find out in this video how a small animal can make a world of difference. Find out more on 👉 www.vsf-belgium.org

Meet Lotte Stikvoort, a final-year veterinary student at Utrecht University, who went to Rwanda with us to conduct research for her master’s thesis. Recently, she presented her findings to us at the office! 🐄 Lotte’s research focused on the prevalence of Bovine Tuberculosis in livestock near the Akagera national park in Rwanda. Bovine Tuberculosis is a zoonosis, meaning it can be transmitted between wildlife, livestock and humans. 🐮 Lotte’s study revealed that a few cattle were infected, probably through contact with wildlife from the park. These infected animals pose a risk not only for livestock, but for humans as well. Although there has been no research yet on the disease’s spread in wildlife, many livestock keepers reported seeing wild animals near their herds. Thank you, Lotte, for your important work! Dominic van Asseldonk conducted his thesis research with the support of VSF-B about pastoralist food culture in Karamoja (Uganda). Last November, he presented the results of his work at the '(Agro)pastoralism in Africa' conference in Senegal. About 170 researchers, NGO staff, pastoralists and others specialists in pastoralism came together to discuss the most pressing issues around the topic. 🐐 Among pastoralist communities in Karamoja, food insecurity remains a challenge, although the diet seems rich and diverse. To address this problem in a sustainable way, it is crucial to gain a deep understanding of foodways. 🍽️ Food plays a central role in the community, and sharing is an integral part of every meal. Beyond nourishment, food serves as a key element in conflict resolution, helping to strengthen relationships and unite communities. Therefore, before implementing any interventions to combat food insecurity, it is essential to consider the broader cultural and social significance of food and foodways. Sudden changes could lead to unintended negative consequences. Our team supports Dominic's and other students’ research in the countries where we are active. 👇Our partner about our project: The 'Renforcement de l'Economie Verte par les organisations de la société civile' (REV-OSC) project in Atacora, Benin. The REV-OSC-project focuses on driving sustainable economic development in rural areas. Through revitalizing livestock farming/breeding, we promote environmentally friendly small-scale farming while empowering local entrepreneurs. A key focus of the project is the adoption of green energy solutions, which support both production and processing activities. Additionally, we are introducing innovative agricultural techniques, such as improved cultivation methods and short-term composting, to enhance the integration of farming and livestock. 🤝 Together with CERD and other partners, we aim a green and more resilient economy in Benin!

It’s become a tradition over the last few years: we start the new year with a reception. Last week, we invited all colleagues, partners, donors and supporters to celebrate our 40th anniversary. 🎉 This year, our reception was all about photography, telling the story of our work through impactful images. We set up a fun photobooth, and two of the photographers we regularly work with shared their experiences working with us in DR Congo and Mauritania. 📷 Special thanks to Tim Dirven and KARAI (Thomas Cytrynowicz) for selecting and presenting their favorite shots from our missions. And our colleague Joke Daelemans for the perfect organisation! Thank you to everyone who joined us, let’s make this year unforgettable!

Update Mauritania 🌍 Vétérinaires Sans Frontières is committed to humanitarian aid. 💙 Due to rising insecurity in Mali, many families have been forced to leave their homes. Thankfully, host villages in Mauritania’s Hodh El Gharbi region are providing them with refuge. 🙌 In December, we distributed food parcels to 100 dislocated families. This initiative is part of our collaboration with the ‘Service de Coopération et d'Action Culturelle’ of the French Embassy in Nouakchott. Together, we are supporting the efforts of the goverment and local communities to offer these families a safe and supportive environment. ➡️Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e_63f2GN 📷©Karai #VSF #Veterinairessansfrontieres #humanitarian #Mauritania
