A new study from Princeton University found that "high-income nations were responsible for 13% of global loss of forest habitats outside their own borders. The US alone was responsible for 3% of the world’s non-US forest habitat destruction." They found that the deforestation was being driven primarily by demand for beef, palm oil, timber and soya beans. The good news is there are solutions. In the short term, governments can enforce greater supply chain transparency and integrity to ensure consumers can be confident they aren't purchasing products contributing to deforestation. Longer term, governments can support alternative proteins like precision fermentation and cultivated meat which allow the production of meat, palm oil and soya products with a tiny fraction of the land use and environmental footprint of existing agriculture. #Undavossummit was a fascinating space—calm and structured, yet filled with conversations tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues, particularly around a topic that is very dear to me: no peace without food security. It was a privilege to be a part of the #Weplanet panel discussion, exchanging ideas with passionate changemakers. Over the weekend Belgium shut down Doel 1 - removing enough clean energy for nearly half a million homes, and replacing it with GAS! WePlanet was there with allies to mourn this loss and call upon the new Belgian government and ENGIE to,   1. Halt decommissioning   2. Restart reactors  3. Abolish the nuclear phaseout law  Two more reactors are set to be shutdown in Belgium and others are at risk across Europe. Dhaka tops the global air pollution list with an AQI of 251 – classified as "very unhealthy." Air quality worsens in winter and improves during the monsoon, but the health risks remain severe. According to WHO, air pollution claims 7 million lives annually, increasing the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory infections.
