  • 🆕 Position paper: 1️⃣ year after - what happened to the EU Grids Action Plan? 🏗️ One year ago the EU presented its Grids Action Plan. It comprised 14 immediate actions to accelerate the build-out of Europe's electricity #grids and optimise the use of existing grid connections. 📢 For WindEurope one thing is clear: Infrastructure drives competitiveness. Europe's economy will not be competitive unless it is underpinned by the electricity infrastructure it needs. The EU Grids Action Plan was the right initiative and the right time. But it's not implemented fast enough. We need more action from the EU, Member States and TSOs. 🆘 A recent WindEurope study found that hundreds of gigawatts of new wind energy are stuck in grid permitting queues: https://lnkd.in/dzbZnEme 📝 In our new position paper we are breaking down what Europe needs to do now to accelerate grid build-out and unlock valuable wind energy capacity: https://lnkd.in/egsUdgGA

🌲♻️ Sustainability and innovation in action: could you ever picture wooden wind turbines? On the sidelines of our #EoLIS2024 event, Paula Rey Garcia and Giles Dickson yesterday visited Modvion’s factory in Gothenburg for a tour with Modvion CEO Otto Lundman. 👷 Modvion is a leading manufacturer of wooden wind turbine towers, replacing steel and concrete with renewable materials. This is great for sustainability. Wooden modules come with a much lower carbon footprint and the material itself stores carbon. The result is a carbon-negative tower, storing more carbon than is produced during manufacturing, transport and installation. And Modvion sources its wood only from regional European partners. 🚚 The wooden modules are also easier to transport thanks to their lower size and weight. This will one day allow us to build large wind turbines in locations that would have been otherwise inaccessible due to transport infrastructure restrictions. 🇸🇪 This year Modvion launched its first commercial wind turbine with a wooden tower in Skara, Sweden. It is 105m high and has a capacity of 2 MW. The company is currently working on a 6 MW turbine and says there’s no limit for their wood in terms of wind speed and height. ♻️ Modvion’s factory in Gothenburg is a great testament to the European wind industry’s constant drive to innovate and become more sustainable. • 🌬️♻️ Do you know all the cool ways to repurpose old wind turbine blades? ❇️✅ Wind farms have a standard lifetime of 20-25 years - with some turbines lasting up to 35 years and longer. 85-90% of a modern wind turbine's mass is fully recycled. 💡 But blades are harder to recycle. Many companies are now trying new ways to repurpose and reuse old blades. 🤝💚 An excellent example of innovation in turbine sustainability is BladeBridge. The company showcases how decommissioned turbine blades can be repurposed for a circular economy. ♻️ Through advanced inspection and reverse engineering, projects like BladeBridge turn blades into sustainable products for green infrastructure, such as cycling bridges or furniture. This approach not only reduces carbon emissions but also embraces circular economy principles. 🔜 It's the second day of our “End of Life Issues and Strategies” seminar #EoLIS2024 - stay tuned for more real-life repurposing solutions to enhance the sustainability of wind energy. • 🤔🏗️ Europe is not yet reaping the benefits of repowering old wind farms. 🎤 Today at our “End of Life Issues and Strategies” seminar (#EoLIS2024) in Gothenburg: more and more wind turbines start to reach the end of their operational lifetime. Repowering them - replacing them with new turbines - is proving to be very effective. Repowering on average reduces the number of turbines in a wind farm by 25%, while nearly tripling the output of the wind farm and quadrupling the output per wind turbine. 💬 “More electricity with fewer turbines – repowering is a no-brainer. But Governments are not doing enough to drive it. Most old wind farms just carry on with inefficient turbines”, said Giles Dickson, WindEurope CEO. ⏩ Paula Rey Garcia of the European Commission stressed the need for Member States to implement the EU permitting and repowering provisions in the revised Renewable Energy Directive. 🔋⚡ Repowering Ukraine with renewables and storage Today WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson moderated a panel at "Repower Ukraine with Energy Storage and Renewables" hosted by the Energy Storage Coalition. #Renewables like wind and #energystorage are cornerstones of Ukraine's sustainable, secure, and independent energy future. Ukraine must integrate these sectors into the rebuilding processes. By doing so it will reduce its dependence on external energy sources and increase its energy security. The event explored the deployment of renewables and storage in the country. Panelists discussed financial viability and regulatory frameworks. Vadym Utkin Ievgeniia Kopytsia

🇮🇸 Wind energy is coming to Iceland! 💨⚡ There are only a few countries in Europe which have not installed significant capacities of wind energy yet. Iceland is one of them. The country's electricity system largely relies on hydro and geothermal power. 🆕 This week WindEurope members ENERCON and Landsvirkjun signed a contract to build Iceland's first commercial-scale wind farm. It will feature 28 turbines and have a capacity of 120 MW. That's a big leap forward. So far Iceland only had 3 MW of wind energy - enough to power a few thousand households. 🌍 Expanding wind in Iceland is important to decarbonise energy demand which has not been electrified yet, for example in the transport sector. Wind energy will help Iceland to become more energy-independent and Europe to deliver on its climate-neutrality target.

  • 👷♂️👷♀️Wanted: more than 200,000 wind workers – but where to find them? 👩🏫 #Education and #skills are increasingly becoming decisive factors for the success of Europe’s Clean Industrial Deal. 📈The European wind industry is set to expand from 370,000 jobs today to 600,000 jobs by 2030. This creates a serious skills gap: over the next 6 years more than 200,000 new wind workers need to be recruited and trained. At a recent “Education Roundtable” WindEurope brought together representatives from UNESCO, the European Commission, national wind energy associations, academics, school networks and other education actors to discuss how educational programmes and policies can align with the workforce needs of the green transition. 👇 Learn more in our latest news piece: https://lnkd.in/eQPRuWGP
