🌎 𝑳𝒊𝒗𝒆: 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆'𝒔 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒉𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔 2024? At a time of heightened geopolitical instability and rapid change, Europe's Strategic Choices 2024, hosted by Chatham House and the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University, brings together leading voices to reflect on the critical challenges and opportunities shaping Europe's security landscape. The conference underlines a common understanding: Europe must rethink its strategic posture to address emerging threats! As I write, participants are gathering for a packed second day at the Ritz Carlton in the heart of Berlin. Let me give you a glimpse of what was at the heart of yesterday's discussions: 🔹 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: The war in Ukraine has changed Europe's security role, highlighting the need for innovation, speed and scalability in defence strategies. Strengthening joint procurement, fostering public-private partnerships, and leveraging learnings from the Ukrainian innovation ecosystem have emerged as top priorities. 🔹 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Participants recognised the need for greater European autonomy while maintaining strong transatlantic ties. As Europe's dependence on the US comes under scrutiny, the urgency of pooling resources and navigating shifting US priorities was clear. Everyone knows what we should be doing. What is lacking is the political will and leadership to unite the EU27 behind a common strategic approach. 🔹 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦: The interconnectedness of global security threats — from hybrid warfare to economic resilience to disinformation — was a recurring theme. Europe's strategy must align with allies while addressing vulnerabilities in its supply chains, economic security and technological capabilities. The conference is an important reminder: Europe's strategic choices today will define its role on the global stage tomorrow. Collective determination, innovation and adaptability will be key to navigating the complexities of a multipolar world. Thanks to Maïa Madani Davies and Young European Leadership (YEL) for giving me the opportunity to attend this forum! What is your strategic choice 2024?👇
