Yesterday, I kicked off my first class in the course on Introduction to Medical Device Legislation for master’s students in biomedical engineering. It isn’t about steering them toward a career as regulatory specialists. This course isn’t about bureaucracy or red tape—it’s about equipping future disruptors with the tools to take an idea, design a product, and build a company that can actually make it to market. Because in medtech, knowing the rules isn’t about being a conformist, mindlessly adhering to standards, guidelines and protocols or blindly following instructions without questions—it’s about knowing how to move forwards without getting stuck. The difference between an idea that stays on paper and one that changes lives is often just the ability to cross the valley of death.
