About us
"Demystifying the Digital Oilfield, or The Life of Bob, Digital Oilfield Project Manager" The term Digital Oilfield (DOF) was introduced to the upstream industry many years ago now. Just like IoT today and Cloud yesterday, it was positioned as a holistic solution to every brown field problem, and an absolute requirement for any green field project. The concepts by themselves were not revolutionary, but rather evolutionary. It made sense to integrate technology, processes and people with the support of high quality data. How could it not? A few implementations made headlines globally, with success stories popping up here and there. Yet, in retrospective, one wonders if the Digital Oilfield has fallen short of its high expectations. To many, a lack of clear path to implementation put the initiative on halt or it never even started. To others, a lack of understanding of integration planning or a desire to focus on technology right away led to project disaster. For a few however, good planning coupled with clear definition of scope and measurable performance indicators for the asset teams enabled remarkable operational improvements. In the Demystifying the Digital Oilfield Series of articles, IPCOS illustrates the important concepts to be considered to successfully plan and implement a project. The value behind DOF is real, measurable and does not require heavy investments for quick and measurable ROIs. It does however require methodology, horizontal understanding of the asset and strong communication skills. Let’s follow Bob in his new role as DOF project manager throughout the life cycle of a DOF project.
