Earlier this week, representatives from finance, shipping and government sectors joined a workshop to discuss solutions and ideas for accelerating sustainable finance to drive shipping's decarbonisation. Co-hosted by Lloyd's Register's Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and Environmental Defense Fund, key themes were 👉 unlocking finance for energy saving technologies and retrofits; 👉 how financial institutions can accelerate shipping’s clean transition while meeting their sustainable finance targets 👉 unlocking financing to support adoption of e-fuels in shipping. Finance, shipping and government sectors joined an LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and Environmental Defense Fund co-hosted workshop on Sustainable Finance for Shipping’s Decarbonisation earlier this week. The in-person event brought together key stakeholders to discuss solutions and ideas for accelerating sustainable finance to drive shipping's decarbonisation. Key themes discussed included unlocking finance for energy saving technologies and retrofits; accelerating finance for shipping's decarbonisation; and, unlocking financing to support adoption of e-fuels in shipping. 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲? 🌍 Yesterday at #EuropeanHydrogenWeek, our Dr. Sofia Esquivel Elizondo took the stage during the session on 𝙀𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙮𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙣 𝙀𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙮 to highlight one of the most critical - and often overlooked - issues in the #hydrogen economy: emissions. While hydrogen has the potential to move the #EU’s clean #EnergyTransition forward, its success depends on reducing emissions from its production, handling, and use. Key takeaways from Sofia’s session: 🔸 Many are still unaware that H2 is an indirect greenhouse gas (#GHG). 🔸The tiny H2 molecule leaks across the entire value chain, impacting its climate benefits. 🔸We currently don’t know the exact scale of H2 leaks - estimates range from less than 1% to as much as 20%. 🔸Real-world measurements are starting to provide insights into these leaks. 🔸While we wait for accurate data on leak rates, immediate actions can already be taken to reduce emissions.
