A recent Eurobarometer survey reveals that Europeans strongly believe in the benefits of science and technology, with 83% viewing them positively. At the same time, the findings highlight the need to make research more open and relevant to society's needs. #EUfunded experts already promote openness, transparency, and public engagement in research. By using cutting-edge technologies and fostering international collaborations, they are working to make science more inclusive and reduce disparities. They support open access to publicly funded research which benefits the economy and citizens. And they also tackle challenges like climate change and diseases to ensure a more sustainable future. Innovators, businesses, policy makers, universities and everyone interested, we want to hear from you! Contribute to the newly launched call for evidence and help us design the EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy to support startups and smaller companies grow in the Single Market and cut red tape. From today until 17 March, share your ideas, proposals and knowledge and contribute to designing a comprehensive strategy that will enable Europe’s startups and scaleups to thrive in Europe and compete globally. Following up on the Competitiveness Compass, the EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy will create an environment for young innovative startups to thrive. It will address the financing and other obstacles that prevent new companies from scaling up in Europe. The aim is to simplify the regulatory framework, to make it possible for innovative companies to benefit from a single set of rules across the Single Market, and to facilitate their access to finance and talent. 📢 How to bridge the innovation gap with Technology Infrastructures? Europe’s businesses and startups need access to top-tier facilities to develop, test, and scale new technologies. Technology Infrastructures (TIs) provide this critical support, but fragmented funding and access barriers are holding them back. We have just published an expert group report and strategic recommendations to improve the TIs ecosystem and strengthen Europe's competitiveness and innovation capacity. Key recommendations: ✅ A clearer definition of TIs is needed to strengthen coordination across the EU. ✅ Improve access, particularly for SMEs and startups, by simplifying procedures and increasing visibility. ✅ Prioritise strategic investments in critical technologies. ✅ Establish a robust governance framework, bringing together Members States, research organisations and industry. ✅ Develop dedicated funding at both European and national levels. These will feed in the upcoming European Strategy for Research and Technology Infrastructures, which will be instrumental in closing Europe's innovation gap—a key objective of the Competitiveness Compass. The Western Balkans have made progress in environmental and climate action, but there is still much to do. Air quality has improved, but it remains a significant problem for the region. Greenhouse gas emissions remain stable, but the use of renewable energy sources is growing. Water management is made difficult by agricultural runoff and hydrological degradation, but there have been new investments in wastewater infrastructure. Overall, the region has taken steps to align with EU rules on environment and climate, including policy adaptation, better monitoring and reporting procedures, and greater focus on emission reduction targets.
