  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) can help us reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. The EU supports research and development activities on SMRs, looking at nuclear safety, security, safeguards, radiation protection and radioactive waste management. Our scientists work to provide excellence in nuclear research. We bring scientific and technical support to the European Commission to make sure that the SMR models that are being developed are safe. We also collaborate with international organisations to advance SMR research. Learn more about our work on SMRs ⬇️ Bernard Magenhann, Ulla Engelmann, Mai Ling Corke

  • Have you heard of funding research by lottery? Check out our new Research & Innovation (R&I) Literature Review on funding by lottery and other alternative approaches to research funding! This edition connects cutting-edge scientific evidence with thought-provoking ideas to inspire R&I policymakers and support evidence-based decisions. Key takeaways: ✔️A radically innovative approach to simplify research funding allocation and reduce workload for applicants and evaluators. ✔️ Funding by lottery can complement merit-based systems while mitigating potential reviewer bias. ✔️ Lotteries can open new opportunities for radically new proposals. ✔️Lotteries are rarely implemented without quality controls. ✔️ Lotteries can be a fair solution when proposals have very similar quality, making it difficult to objectively choose a winner. • Today, the European Commission has presented a new EU Action Plan to strengthen the cybersecurity of hospitals & healthcare providers. It's an important step to enhance threat detection, preparedness and response capabilities of Europe's health sector. Since 2014, Horizon Programmes have been instrumental in funding #research projects to find innovative solutions that can boost the resilience of healthcare institutions against cyber threats. • 📚 Today, ten European research funding and performing organisations signed a Statement of Intent to support a collectively funded Open Research Europe (ORE) with a non-profit mission for the public good. ORE, the European Commission’s open access publishing platform, has been transformative since 2021. It offers cost-free publishing for grantees of EU funding programmes, supporting high-quality research through transparent, post-publication open peer review. By signing the Statement of Intent, the signatories commit to building a collectively funded ORE, enhancing equity, diversity, and transparency in open access publishing. This is the first Europe-wide initiative to develop ORE into a non-profit, large-scale publishing service, investing in open-source infrastructures. We support this initiative and invite other organisations to join and build a broader coalition to ensure a wider success. 👉 Read the Statement of Intent: https://lnkd.in/ehtCCJyF 👉 Learn more about Open Research Europe: europa.eu/!xP74Wv #ResearchImpactEU #EUResearchArea

  • How much do you know about the Organ-on-chip technology? 🤔 Beyond bringing us closer to personalised medicine and animal-free testing, this technology could also enhance the EU's competitiveness.    Organ-on-chip (OoC) integrates biotechnology with micro-fluidic chips and sensors to build miniaturised versions of human organs, such as the lung, heart, or liver.     These devices contain living human cells that replicate the functioning of real organs. The technology allows researchers to study how diseases affect human tissues and develop novel therapies.    Currently, this technology is not fully integrated into drug development and clinical practice.    That is why our scientists have identified standardisation needs and opportunities and have developed a roadmap. • The EU has enlisted researchers’ support to tackle smuggling and security threats at sea, helping border control and customs agencies with an integrated maritime surveillance model. This surveillance system is helping all EU countries to smoothly cooperate in tackling challenges such as people smuggling, illegal fishing, pollution and potential security alerts. Enhanced data sharing will allow them to communicate and exchange information about potential threats and emergency situations, improving safety at sea, border control, trade and protection of people. • 🌠 We're excited to announce the European Commission has officially established the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory European Research Infrastructure Consortium (CTAO ERIC)! This milestone marks a significant step forward in global astro-particle physics, as the CTAO ERIC will construct and operate the world's largest and most powerful ground-based gamma-ray observatory. What does this mean? 🔷 Discovering over 1,000 new gamma-ray emitting cosmic sources, shedding light on the most powerful events in the cosmos. 🔷 Driving a deeper understanding of the universe, revealing new insights into dark matter, particle acceleration and the frontiers of physics. 🔷 Expanding our knowledge of the cosmos, and our place within it. The Observatory will adopt an open, proposal-driven approach, offering public access to its high-level science data and software products and fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. As the 29th European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) established since 2009, the CTAO ERIC demonstrates the EU's commitment to facilitating cross-border scientific collaboration. By joining the ERIC family, the CTAO ERIC proves that the ERIC legal instrument facilitates pan-European and international scientific collaboration, enabling research infrastructures to pool resources, share expertise and drive innovation on a global scale.
